Neither, but if I had to pick one I would say the former rather than the latter. While it was extremely cool, the robot wasn't actually following the music. It's just programmed to make the movements, and the orchestra just followed along. Also, all it really did was keep time. A real talented conductor is able to respond to what's actually happening and adapt to the needs of the orchestra as he goes along. My band director in high school was incredible. He could lead a group of people who had never picked up an instrument. There won't be any replacing humans any time soon, when it comes to art.

Ahhh...it was just a shot. :) I actually have an old friend that conducts (or atleast used to, haven't seen him in a decade). But the truth is...a GOOD orchestra doesn't need a conductor beyond when to start unless he/she feels like holding a note a little longer than the 300 times they rehersed it. :) But you're right..for the new musicians, or even good musicians playing together for the first time a conductor is very important.

I just poke fun at them because to me a conductor is no better/worse than say...a batting coach. Very important, does a lot of work BEFORE the big game, but doesn't need to be on camera when I'm at the plate. But in the ORCHESTRA...he's front and center like some demi-god when really he could walk off the stage at any moment and a good orchestra could play without him. When it comes to the "big game" for an orchestra, ANYBODY with a base sense of rythm and knowledge of the peice could do the job provided the musicians know the score and have rehersed together.

No disrepeect to the profession, but I do I have to smile when I see something like ASIMO conducting.
