Discrimination against blacks linked to dehumanization
Discrimination against blacks linked to dehumanization
Crude historical depictions of African Americans as ape-like may have disappeared from mainstream U.S. culture, but research presented in a new paper by psychologists at Stanford, Pennsylvania State University and the University of California-Berkeley reveals that many Americans subconsciously associate blacks with apes. picked by doggylives 2 months ago

Jim Crow museum is a great site to look at the history of racist memorabilia and how black people have been depicted in mainstream media.

Ohhh puhhhllease. I got 1/3 down and had to stop reading...

"researchers found subjects could identify blurry ape drawings much faster after they were primed with black faces than with white faces"

Could that maybe have something to do with the fact that monkeys have brown fur and black people have brown skin???!!! WTF!!

Take a bunch of black people and try flashing images of white people/black people then blurry furry pink bunnies and tell me they won't identify the bunny faster after being primed with a white person's face. Should I then say all black people think white people are nothing more than dyed rabbits?

Am I missing something? I'm sorry..some researchers need to get their heads out of their asses and find a cure for cancer instead.

Unfortunately racism is still alive and well in the US.

The NYTimes ran a story today on Hillary's victory in West Va. yesterday and reported some people openly admitted to being racist.

From the article:

"The number of white Democratic voters who said that race influenced their choice on Tuesday was among the highest recorded in voter surveys in the Clinton-Obama nomination fight. Two in 10 white West Virginia voters said that race was an important factor in their vote, and more than 8 in 10 of them backed Mrs. Clinton, according to surveys of voters leaving the polls."

Some racist looking stuff going on in Ol' Miss as well. Remains to be seen.

If 20% of the polled voters in West Virginia admit their vote is swayed by race what are the actual numbers there and in the rest of the country?

Whatever you may think about the study itself or the techniques they used the fact remains that the ease with which blacks were lynched, ordered to the back of queues, not allowed into certain restaurants, denied access to the same jobs as white people, spat on, enslaved, beaten, murdered ect must be a product of dehumanization so the study does raise a valid point.

If you lived in a predominantly white area with a black child, as I do, you'd soon see that racism is alive and well.

I'm not saying that racism doesn't still exist-- I'm just saying that the study blows. :) It was a waste of 6 years and IMO didn't prove the conclusion. Not to say the conclusion doesn't have merrit either..but it's a helluva jump from blury monkey to "Discrimination against blacks linked to dehumanization"

But seriously, we've come a long way since the days of slavery. We still have a long way to go, too.

It is important to understand how the mind comes to conclusions if we ever want to change for the better. It is important to understand so that we can move beyond these archaic ideas and on to other things like curing cancer. I see your point about how we should not be bothered because racism is BS, but it is also very real and affects all peoples lives.

Good point. The idea that Africans were not human in the first place prompted them to be treated like animals and made slaves. Although, after that there were great efforts made to teach that African Americans were not human. The idea of the Brute comes to mind, a man so animal that he attacked and raped and killed. This idea was perpetuated so that people would not consider Black men human.

So? 80% of blacks vote for Obama because he's black. Racism isn't only whites against blacks, it's blacks against whites as well, and the Democratic campaign has been a particularly racist campaign.

However, the only way to stop racism is to stop identifying people by race. This means no affirmative action, no race questions on applications or surveys. We need to be color-blind. But instead we try to help the minorities, and it only leads to more racism.

I agree..and I find it laughable that people are down voting my comment. It's the study's methods and misguided path to the results that I mock, nothing more.

Some teacher or professor once told me this one line YEARS ago and this study reminded me of it... "If I find that 90% of the people who got the flu this year ate oranges, it doesn't mean that oranges are a leading cause of the flu"

A couple thoughts that aren't necessarily arguments.

First, whites, especially white males, define dominant culture in a way that minorities do not. White privilege, do ya.

Second, race (like gender) is a socially instilled concept.

Finally, until we stop socializing people to see race, having a colour-blind society only hinders race relations within a society.

White privilege is something that the majority of whites will argue against or ignore :D

Tim Wise makes some great points about white privilege in this video

Um, so? The majority of this country is white, thus it's not a shock to find out that a majority of the people defining culture are...white. It's a game of percentages, nothing else.

Second, race (like gender) is a socially instilled concept.
Because of questions on applications and surveys, and most importantly because of Affirmative Action.

Finally, until we stop socializing people to see race, having a colour-blind society only hinders race relations within a society.
You should read "White Guilt" by Shelby Steele. It's an excellent book that goes against what you just said there. A color-blind society may hinder *race relations* in one way, but it accelerates race relations in an entirely different way.

We don't need to help *race relations* in that whites be friendly and unracist towards blacks. That's an awful way to look at it. We need to help *race relations* in that everyone works together, that we're void of race.

Here here!

I wish I could upvote you more!

Racism is typically defined by the media as whites against blacks....however there is such a thing as reverse discrimination and not nearly as newsworthy.

I have never seen color or race when I look at a person and formulate my impression of them.

All we should ever see is people.

Some points, and some (talking about) overt racism. Or per'aps subversive? I couldn't hear him all the way through it. Semester end, brain overload. Don't take it personally.

Anywho, of course we'll argue or ignore it. It serves dominant culture, which allows us such privilege, to do so.

Might pick it up.

What I mean to say is that most people seem to use "colour blindness" as a way to sweep any genuine discussion of race relations under the rug. Genuine colour blindness is a rare and wonderful thing.
