 Soldier's donated horse heads for slaughter
Soldier's donated horse heads for slaughter
When a local soldier offered his horses for free because he was deploying to Iraq, a Pierce County woman said she wanted them for 4H.

But just hours later, one of the horses was sold for slaughter. picked by muppet 7 months ago

« topofall : What's '4H'?
It is an organization that teaches life and leadership skills to children through agricultural related activities like raising and caring for animals. The 4H comes from their pledge;

"I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world."

Anyone who takes a horse to an auction, hours after she got it knows where it will end up.

That's why you should never give an animal away.

Too bad they didn't further educate what happens to the horses that ARE bought by killer buyers and what they must endure on their trip down and there grisly deaths.

He was one of the lucky ones to get saved. It's amazing that someone found out he was sold for slaughter in just enough time and was able to buy him off the feed lot.

HBO sports has a segment on right now about ex-racehorses going to slaughter. They followed one from racetrack to auction to slaughter in Mexico. A friend of a friend runs a horse rescue and she was on the show. One horse they just saved, Little Chief, even had a sticker on his jockey club file that if he ever needed a home, Nick Zito (his first trainer and hall of famer) and his wife would take him. No one ever contacted them. He was rescued from a slaughter feed lot and the rescue ran his jockey club tatoo and found out who he was and then found out that the Zito's wanted the horse back when he was retired. He will be leaving the rescue on his way to Zito's farm soon. When they were contacted, they paid all the horses rescue expenses and made a nice donation to the rescue.

Hopefully Congress will pass the bill that will make it illegal to ship U.S. horses to Mexico and Canada for slaughter.
