The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement
The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement
Phasing out the human race by voluntarily ceasing to breed will allow Earth's biosphere to return to good health. Crowded conditions and resource shortages will improve as we become less dense.

While I don't agree with their political agenda, I for one have already chosen not to breed. I made the decision based on personal beliefs, and don't judge those who DO want to have children, and will honestly and politely ask that you not judge me for making my choice.

This may turn out to be a prophetic movie:

I've always said that those who believe the wold is overpopulated should set an example for the rest of us by committing suicide. I guess this is one step in the right direction.

I would recommend that you not move to Utah, because that request will be roundly ignored by most folks there.

It's ignored by most people, period. For some reason, others presume that THEIR choice should be EVERYONE's choice.

Yeah, I'm never going to have children either. For me, besides the fact I am not a kid person, I don't want to pass on my genes, and create another little drain on the planet. I'm enough.

If everyone adopted these views and put it into practice it'd be fun in about 150 years time to see the planet. Don't get me wrong, I respect everyone's rights to have as many or as few/non kids as they see fit.

I just see it this way, if my parents had said "Hey we don't want anymore "drains" on the planet, lets not have babies" There would be no me. Now that thought might make a few people reading this think "If only!!" but I'm happy, with kids of my own, kids who I'm raising responsibly, kids with respect for animals, other people, the environment ect.

I just find the idea's and views on this website (not plime, the one I posted) a bit depressing and gloomy. Planet earth has endured far worse than mankind has thrown at it since the start of the industrial age and has recovered and will go on to do so long after mankind has died off. The planets healed itself of far worse than anything humans have done or will do to it.

Go and ask the inhabitants of Pompeii how fragile the planet is. I think it's presumptuous and arrogant to assume that humans can bring about an entire planets downfall and that anything we can do or have done will have any lasting/dire effect on it.

I could go for not having a species so devoted to destroying all life on this planet that it develops weapons capable of wiping out everything on this planet with the possible exception of some bacteria and some simple deep sea creatures and then waves said weapons around in petty political and religious disputes exist.

Aaanyway, I personally do not plan to reproduce, partially because I don't need my god awful genes contaminating the gene pool any more, and partially because I very much dislike children.

I couldn't agree more.

The planet will exist for another few billion years before the sun red giants, but I don't think humans will be here in 200 years or so if we continue at this rate. Oh well, people, keep having your 4 or 5 or 10 kids.... it's their grandchildren that will have to live and suffer and die in a tragically polluted and inhospitable earth, not us, eh?

99% of the human population is not going to suddenly decide not to reproduce. Thoughtful, sincere, educated people will curtail their reproduction, and the Idiocracy scenario will prevail. You're not going to save *anything* that way. While I respect your decision to reproduce or not reproduce as you see fit, your reasons are not necessarily entirely sound - because things like population dynamics are far from simple. Replacing yourselves with more educated, thoughtful people may make a lot more sense in the long run.

And yet, we're still having incredible negative effects on the health of the planet.

P.S. Of COURSE we're arrogant. We think we're the crown jewel of creation.

Everyone here has been quite polite of other people's opinions and choices but this comment comes across as ever so slightly derisive and patronizing.

You choose not to have kids and that's great for you, but there's no need to be condescending to people who do choose to have kids.

I've got 5 children, 3 step-kids and 2 biologically mine. I never planned to have any kids but life being life, can't always be planned for.

How many children would you say each person should be allowed in a lifetime, IYHO?

Hey, I never said people should have no children, but large families are quickly putting a strain on Earth's resources.

I haven't yet decided if I'll have my own kidlings, but I think 1 or 2 is fair enough for me and everyone. It keeps our species population under control, but kidlings are great little things and I don't think people should be denied the chance to have their own.

I think of Earth's resources and I think of the millions of orphans on this planet already. In today's globalized society, it seems selfish, IMHO for one mother to spawn off 17 babies when she could have easily had just 1 or 2 biologically and adopted the rest. I spent a good chunk of my childhood playing with my adopted cousins because some of my relatives had that same philosphy so I know I've got a bias here.

I know this comes across as condescending, but I'm not trying to be snooty about it. It's just that populations of every species die off substantially when they can't be supported by the present food supply, and I think we as humans are in for a bit of that if we keep going at the rate we are (and by this I refer not to just the population being out of control but to the way we recklessly pollute and, here in NA at least, take water for granted... our agriculture will be screwed in a few decades unless we change things yesterday)
