Adulterer, Drunk Driver, Father of a bastard. Not the best resume for a politician.

ATTORNEY:
"I'm sure you'll be fine."
"You were arrested did you say?"
"For running a red light huh?"
"Oh you were drunk too?"
"Well at least you had someone to bail you out quickly."
"Oh she's your ex-girlfriend? Not your wife?"

"You dumbass."

I think when you become a politician, you should be castrated and have your liver removed.

I think that would take care of a lot of these problems.

I'd prefer to have a politician who doesn't claim to be perfect. It's asnine to expect politicians to be perfect, it's unrealistic to expect that they've never done anything wrong. Which is better--someone who got caught, owned up to mistakes and maybe learned something, or someone who denies having ever done anything wrong?

And why is marital virtue even relevant? Is philandering related to the jobs expected of a politician? Messing around on your spouse somehow prevents one from balancing a budget?

The guy screwed up--I'd be more interested in how he handled the results than the acts themselves.

That may be true, but the way you run your personal life WILL mirror how you run your professional life...

I know it is unrealistic to think that anyone... and I mean anyone is perfect. We all have faults... but a DUI will keep you from getting a liscense, a loan or a job at anyplace higher on the ladder than fast food... if you are irresponsible enuf to get a DUI, imagine the damage you could do in a political office with that same irresponsability? That is a criminal record... and if it affects our chances as citizens of getting a job (I couldn't hold my current position with a criminal conviction) then it should damn well effect our politicians as well.

I disagree. Yes, there are some crimes that reflect poor judgement, and it's POSSIBLE that getting a DUI is one of them. But without knowing more, how can you make that call? Is this man guilty of binge drinking? Is this his third or fourth conviction? Getting one DUI does NOT make him a failure, and it's ridiculous that our society and legal system has gotten to the point where it does.

And no, I don't condone drinking and driving. I'm just saying that this is hardly an epic transgression.

I don't know, we are talking about THREE different things here at the same time. Four if you count the running of the red light.

He may not be a criminal, he may not be a habitual drinker or drunk driver, but in one fail swoop he showed that his decision making skills SERIOUSLY fall short.

I am curious to find out what else he has decided was a good idea.

I am not saying that a politician has no room for mistakes. I would like them to be human as well but when you throw THREE pretty serious things out there at once, I can definitely see where people would have a problem voting for him.

The affair and subsequent child clearly happened before the drinking and driving. Running a red light was a consequence of being tipsy, presumably. So really, there's only ONE indiscretion that occurred, just more were revealed.

He was trying to visit the girl, which means he's trying to do right by her--doesn't that count in his favor?

I've no clue if this guy is a good person or not, I'm just saying that events like these are often used to judge someone in completely unrelated ways.
