Obama's Uncle and the Liberation of Auschwitz
Obama said: "I had a uncle who was one of the, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps,"

Problem: (1) Obama has no uncle, (2) The Russians liberated Auschwitz, not the Americans.

I think the real question is: Is this important?

And, for someone like me who loves all the media mumbo-jumbo, is this the first you're hearing about it? There are currently a number of claims that this story is being swept under the rug, and thusly imply some pretty strong bias. So is this the first you've heard about this, or did you see it somewhere else?

This is the first I've heard about it. The media has an undeniable hard on for Obama, and it sorta bugs me.

Ha ha, you're right too.

It's very difficult to see people believing things that you know are written to stir up fear, but that's what 99% of politicians do so well.

That's the first thing I thought of!! You'd think that as politicians they'd both be able to lie.

I find it biased and disappointing that this is being "swept under the rug" as INB put it. Is it because he's the favourite?

Either way, I don't care so long as McCain (Bush the Next) doesn't get elected.

Glenn Beck finally covered it. I knew I liked him.

I'm starting to become very, very scared of Obama. The fact that the media just passes over this but jumps on Hillary for a non-issue makes me scared about what can happen with Obama as President.

Will we soon be saying Heil Obama?

It doesn't seem that most of you read the article, only the headline and the subtext.

The content of the article points out that the mistake was in naming the wrong concentration camp. Also, the relative that he was referring to was his great-uncle.

"Senator Obama's family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II - especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald. Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton this afternoon in a statement, which also clarified that the great-uncle "Served in the 89th Infantry Division that Liberated Ohrdruf, a Subcamp of Buchenwald, the First Camp Liberated by Americans, on April 4, 1945."
read beyond the headline.

What fun are gaffes if you can't laugh at them?

We do this with all our politicians, especially those who aspire to the White House.

I don't blame them, they want the most 'electable' democrat to win, and Obama is that guy. I'm with Chinook, as long as McCain doesn't win I don't care. Ron Paul is already down so Obama is the next best thing.

It bugs you that they're hard on Obama....How do you feel about the way the media treats President Bush?

Not picking on you personally, Josh....but I get upset when people bash the hell out of one person (whether it be Bush, Obama, or Billary) but then get pissed when someone bashes their candidate.

This country is the epitome of Double Standards.

How many reporters got all the facts right in this story - and pronounced all the names of the camps correctly? It was Ukrainian soldiers in the Soviet Army that liberated Auschwitz, not Russians. Auschwitz is in Poland now, but it was in the Greater German Reich then. Buchenwald was not a death camp; it did not have a gas chamber. Ohrdruf was a forced labor camp that was a sub-camp of Buchenwald. Ohrdruf wasn't actually "liberated;" it was happened upon by American troops from two divisions on the same day, after the camp had been abandoned by the Germans.

Has anyone bothered to verify that Obama's great uncle was actually in the 89th Division and that he was one of the handful of 89th Division soldiers who actually saw Ohrdruf? The sight of a few dead bodies of prisoners who had died of typhus was not enough to cause a soldier to hole up in the attic for six months.

Uninquisitive acceptance of a headline because it fits ones political agenda, unfortunately is a common practice with much of the electorate.

It's why junk like this mini-attempt at Swift Boating actually works with some folks.

I didn't see a comparason in the article of McCains Sunni-Shiite confusion while promoting his foreign policy expertise.

Both people made mistakes, neither mistake is particulary important in this election.

Hillary was actually there and knew there was no sniper fire.. Obama got two names mixed up when reffering to a place that his great-uncle had been.. very different.. I guess part of hillarys story was true as well though that she was actually there on that day even if there were no shots fired..
