45/125 = .36

double that gives you .72 per day, per couple or about 5/week. Still a fun group, but probably not a whole lot of options for entertainment.

I wonder how the pairings happen, how rigid or flexible to they become (the pairings, not the scientists)

I'm sorry to bust your bubble suebe, but let's look at these figures:

125 people; as they're scientists, the male female ration is probably off, leaning towards the male variant of our species, which will make this story even sadder.....so let's assume a 50:50 ratio, and a completely heterosexual community:
16,500/62,5 = 264 times sex per couple.
That's not all that bad, but.....

it's a community that grows to over 1000 in the summer, and they mentioned this was their year's supply....I don't want to do the math of that one, as the figures will be terribly depressing :P

If they were thinking ahead, staff = as many females as possible.. ;)

It's mighty cold there so I'm guessing they only shipped small sizes to the base.
