Example: Darkey in a watermelon. “Upon opening the watermelon which is made of papier mache, is found a little pickaninany, southern darky with cloth diaper fasted with miniature safety pin and small nursing bottle. His white eyes flash the whole face indicated perfect happiness.” picked by bernardblack 1 year ago

I remember that those Gollywogs were everywhere. The last I seen one was about a year and a half ago in a gift shop. They had them in stock for years and then there was a huge uproar when one person who worked in the same building and visited the store often, decided that it was racist and complained.

The gift shop has since closed down due to lack of business caused by one little doll.

I so totally agree, Gollywogs are dangerous things.

I had one as a child (think I still do somewhere) and thought it was just a cool toy.
Now however, any time I see a black person I feel compelled to stroke its hair and swing it around by the arm. I've been kicked out of three schools and been to prison twice.

Damn Gollywog.

Also, KEROberos, what country is that?

Your name's racist.

I agree that all these have negative racist overtones apart from #7 and #8

I seriously don't think that anyone could reasonably argue that the rest are just reinforcing either negative stereotypes or are strongly influenced by the racist era they were made in.

Sadly enough... there's probably "still" a market for some of this garbage.

We've come a long way (but we aren't quite there yet!)

This stuff is highly collectable now. Some of it is worth big bucks.

It falls under "Black Americana"

1. They're incredibly uncreative.

3. They tend to be a shameless attempt at generating traffic.

4. They're obnoxiously self-important.

5. There's a whole freaking sea of content out there. You can do better than that.

« ReBoot : The Top Ten Reasons that "Top Ten" Articles Get Downvoted on Plime
I think you're being a bit harsh here.

I concede that top ten lists are a cheap way of generating more traffic, but that is no reason to downvote. Sometimes a subject doesn't warrant a five page in-depth essay.

Lists like this can be very interesting/entertaining. In the end, isn't that what we should strive for in links? We should focus more on content when voting, and less on format or our perception of a shameless marketing techniques.

Nope, I'm not. We're all able to downvote for a plethora of reasons (just check the FAQ) The object is to allow us to control content to help create a better site. When I downvote, it's nothing personal -- it's just my job. And yours, too, whenever you find something that just isn't up to par.

But look on the bright side. The post is currently sitting at 400+, so it's not like my vote had that much of an effect. Suck it up, dude.

I see how you could argue that for #7. I don't see #8. Would you explain?
