Neighbors take action when dogs left in hot car
Neighbors take action when dogs left in hot car
A group of neighbors on Manhattan's upper west side took action when they noticed at least half a dozen dogs left inside a sweltering car with the windows closed. I'm glad someone stepped up and did something. Owner should be charged with animal cruelty, no doubt. It was in the 90's with high humidity. Probably hotter in the city. picked by horsefeathers 1 year ago

I saw this report on the news last night. The owner was taken away in handcuffs and charged with animal cruelty, and a couple of other charges. The dogs were placed in shelter until everything is resolved. The video was incredible, watching her grabbing her dogs away from the rescuers, cursing and screaming at everyone.

I was amazed at the video also. I'm so glad someone did something instead of looking the other way.

I'm glad they charged her with animal cruelty, hopefully she will think twice. But it's the dogs that suffer from someone's stupidity.

From what I understand from the lady that runs our Rottweiler rescue, New York City Animal Care and Control is a hell hole. Hopefully they will get this resolved and get those dogs out of that pound, before they do become ill.

Thank you for posting this. How long were they left in the car? The video will not load on dial-up, so if it says that, I missed it.

I'm also curious how long the dogs were left in the car. If the lady pulled up with the AC blasting and ran up to her apt to get something and come back down then those dogs would only have been at risk if something had prevented her from return to her car.

Where is the proof that these dogs were hot and bothered and not just thirsty? Where is the proof that this lady wasn't going to be back in plenty of time to turn the AC back on?

I didn't watch the video either so there may be parts I'm missing. I just know that I love my dog and take extremely good care of it but could see myself leaving her in an air conditioned car for a few moments while I ran upstairs to grab my cellphone.

For the people who couldn't watch the video =0)

On the video, it said the dogs were left in the car for over an hour. Neighbors opened the doors and put the 7 dogs on a leash and gave them water. Thats when the dog owner rushed out of her apartment not knowing what was going on, and had a tug of war with the people holding her dogs and put them back into the car. Thats when the police showed up. The dog owner then yelled out insults at the neighbors and the neighbors returned the favor.

The dogs will be held in a pound until the matter and action taken against her is sorted out.

Now to my opinion: WTF would anyone leave their dogs in the car for that long?

Yes, anything over a few minutes is not at all cool. Over an hour and you're risking serious harm. Thanks for straightening that out Nunkii.

Over an hour?? This lady deserved everything she got. Read this article about how unbelievably hot it can get in a car. I am so proud of the men and women who did something about this.

McNamara called the Eyewitness News assignment desk several times Saturday afternoon.

She say it was poor judgement on her part but neighbors overreacted
Poor judgment? That's your excuse? Your dogs (all seven of them) could have died a slow and painful death. And yet you still blame your neighbors for doing a good deed?

Poor judgment on her part is just proof that she did it on purpose. 'I forgot' or 'an emergency came up' wouldn't make it any less horrific but at least she wouldn't have knowingly tortured her animals.

It was truly sickening watching the news report last night (same report as video). Luckily the neighbors could open the car - I would have broken the window if the door was locked to get those dogs out.

Those dogs were so grateful to get out of the stifling heat in the car, into the stifling, yet bearable heat outside. It was in the mid 90's yesterday in NYC.

I think her punishment should be to sit in a locked car that she is hand cuffed to the steering wheel so she can not get out. Make sure the windows are automatic so she can't unroll them. Let's see how you like it. Then since there were seven dogs(SEVEN!?) in her car for OVER hour she has to stay in the vehicle 7 times as long.

In cool weather this wouldn't be a big deal, and I have done it before (while keeping an eye on him) but 90' is too damn hott to walk a dog, let alone leave them in the heat.

I like that idea.

If it was mid 90's, it was at the least 120 degrees in that car. Probably more with 7 panting long haired dogs in it.

It was mid 90's here this weekend as well and mine couldn't even stand to be outside for more than 5 minutes, even after I filled the baby pool for them.

Dogs can't sweat. That is why they pant. They sweat some through their paws, but not nearly enough to get their body temp down.

I had this sort of thing happen to me the other day. It was around 4:00 in the afternoon, not a super hot day, but warm. We left the window down a bit, it was windy too, so wind was getting in. We ran into the store for 5 minutes to grab something. I am in line paying and this woman comes in mentioning this car, so I said it was my dog and I was only in there for 5 minutes. She proceeded to follow me to the car, calling me an "f-ing b***h". When I told her it was 5 minutes, she said "yeah right!" and proceeded to swear and scream. I lost it on her and started doing it back.

The thing is that my dog has seperation anxiety, he is barking like crazy because he wants someone to be with him. Last time we left him home alone, he cost us $1500 in dental work because he broke 9 teeth on his kennel door. The time before that, he tried to dig his way out and now there is a huge hole in the carpet. But she wouldn't let me explain this and she wouldn't come up and talk to me, she just kept screaming. I am an activist as well and I wouldn't have left him in there if it was hot out, but it was warm.

I wish I would have been able to notice if she was wearing leather shoes, or ask if she uses products that test on animals. And it wouldn't have been so bad if she waited by the car to see how long we would be in there. I just can't stand those "holier than thou" activists that would much rather scream than educate.

Is it ironic that the dogs, if they become permanent residents of the pound, will be euthanized?

We have a Rottie with SA.

It's not easy. We've had him a year, and with alot of work he is alot better and rarely has an episode anymore. We can't crate ours either, as most dogs with severe SA, you can't crate.
