Surjit Singh, a 16-year old 'Dalit' or "untouchable" was caned by his teacher to a point where he almost died when it was discovered he wrote a love poem for a girl in a higher caste. The girls family caned him more at which point he died.

The sad part is I started reading it as "canned" as in "aluminum cans" instead of "caned". I'm thinking...who the hell kills people by throwing cans? ...I should probably start drinking coffee on Monday mornings.
