 Puppy kills 2 month old baby left alone in a swing
Puppy kills 2 month old baby left alone in a swing
Tulsa Police have a lot of questions yet to be answered about what happened, but they believe a 6-week-old black lab bit the baby numerous times. It was unclear how long the baby had been dead when an ambulance was called Monday morning, said police. The 17 yr. old mother and grandmother were in another part of the house. Lab puppy was euthanized that day.

I didn't see in the article where it said that the lab puppy was euthanized but if they did, that was wrong of them. It was a puppy left alone with a baby, they should euthanize the parents and grandmother for be complete idiots.

The medical examiner's report is pending, but police say the evidence clearly shows that the black lab puppy killed the baby. The dog was euthanized and examined at the Tulsa Animal Shelter, and found to be between two and three months old.
It was in the follow up updated link that I posted.

I agree. They hardly have all the facts since the baby was left unattended for up to an hour and a half, and they have no idea yet when the TOD was.

perhaps the parents were dumb. Then again right now as we speak there are 1000's of 1000's of 1000's of children that have a puppy with them that are perfectly fine.

It wasn't even like they left the kid alone with the dog and took off. They were home and didn't dream that the dog would attack the baby.

Something like that is extremely rare.

Wow, it wasn't the dogs fault, he just wanted to play with the baby. Who leaves their baby in a swing alone?

Based on what I know about 2-3 month-old lab puppies, I can guess that what probably happened was that the baby's legs were dangling out of the motorized swing set, and the puppy played with them the same way it would play with ANY dangling, enticing objects. It did what puppies DO.
I am also surmising that the child died from blood loss, though the article didn't say. The child probably also screamed to high heaven as soon as the pup grabbed his foot and most likely continued screaming until he lost consciousness.

And they euthanized THE PUPPY?!?!?!?!?!? Put the mother and grandmother in jail for neglect. This seems like a very clear cut case.

I didn't think that far ahead. If the adults were at home why didn't they hear the baby screaming? Good question

I'm pretty confident that the puppy I saw in the vid clip couldn't have killed a two-month old baby. But maybe that's just me. Poor thing has already been euthanized. Can't wait to hear the real story. Maybe both dogs were involved? I saw an adult pug in one of the vids. Maybe they teamed up.

Puppies and dogs are still animals. I would never leave a baby or young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog. It doesn't matter how well trained, or behaved they are, they are still an animal.

I don't understand either why the adults that were still in the home heard absolutely nothing. And why would the father just leave for work, leaving the baby in the swing (apparently in the kitchen) without getting the mother or grandmother. I'm willing to bet the mother and grandmother were still in bed. Thus the 1 1/2 hours that the baby was left alone in a swing.

It's the parents, not the puppy.

I have zero f**king pity. Of course the parents were negligent. An 8 week old infant is virtually helpless and definitely smaller and vulnerable to a 3 month old puppy. All you have to do is observe the two for a matter of seconds to see which one would pose a threat to the other. Puppies have super sharp teeth and are definitely not to be trusted with an infant. I would trust a 100 lb well-trained adult dog with an infant light years before I would trust a hyperactive untrained puppy [and even then, I still have the sense not to leave said infant unattended with said well-trained dog for ANY amount of time].

And bottom line, that infant did not crawl into his swing by himself. An adult PUT him there and then LEFT HIM UNATTENDED FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME WITH AN ANIMAL THAT OUTWEIGHED HIM AND HAD SHARP TEETH. Yeah, lots of children have puppies. Children can defend themselves. Infants left in swings cannot.

I say every adult involved should be put down.

I also want to fire a cannon straight at the face of the commentor from the original story who said this:

So sad, but I find it hard to believe a lab would do that. They are the friendliest breed. And a puppy no less. I wonder if it was a lab/pit mix.
Leave your two month old baby with a labrador puppy and see what happens, Dog Whisperer. Clearly you have no concept of how puppies, babies or nature in general operate. Puppies of any breed will chew on anything that can't get away from them quickly enough and Labs are among the biggest offenders. I know because I grew up with two and have lost countless shoes, toys, pairs of glasses, furniture legs and miscellania to their tireless jaws.

I hate dog breedism almost as much as I hate general stupidity and child neglect.

Way too many questions with this one.

Why was the baby left so long?
Why did no one hear him screaming, which he MUST have been?
How could a 6 week old puppy do enough damage to cause death?

Most of us have had puppies. Remember when you got them at 6 weeks? Could they do this?

I think there is more to this story. A lot more.

The update says the puppy was 2-3 months old. Depending on its genetics, a Lab puppy that age should weigh around 10 lbs. Keep in mind that this may not have been a pure-bred Labrador, either. It could have been much, much bigger.

That MIGHT answer the puppy question (tho I still have my doubts) but not the other ones.

They showed the puppy in the video. It didn't look very large. I would say more in the 2 month range.

There are way too many questions with this one.

I thought they said 6 weeks. But I guess puppy teeth are very sharp. And yes responsibility needs to be placed on the parents regardless.

/somewhat related rant

Huh.

It takes a baby to die to get some press on a dog bit other than a pit bull. I speak from experience as I get dog bites all the time that never make the news.

I had a husky bite a 16 yr old girl so hard that it broke some of her front teeth.

Newsworthy? Apparently not. But ANY dog can bite.

They have banned Pit bulls in a town near me.Pit bull ban My dogs are Pit bull like. My oldest bullie actually got certified for therapy dog IN Lakewood. I am not even sure if I can take her in there for yearly picnics, visits and meetings.

Soon when the dogs people banish are gone, another will take their place to be feared or banned.

When the they came for the Pit bulls,
I remained silent;
I did not own one.

When they locked up the Rottweilers,
I remained silent;
I did not own one.

When they came for the Dobermans,
I did not speak out;
I did not own one.

When they came for the Cane corsos, mastiffs, (insert powerful breed here)
I remained silent;
I didn't own one.

When they came for my dog,
there was no one left to speak out.

I always say you can only trust a dog to act like a dog. I dont leave my dog unattended with the baby. Ever. She is a good dog. She still has a LOT of puppy left in her. Very hyper and rough. And to leave a baby alone for over an hour??? That baby had to have been screaming. Why did no one think, "hmmmm, the baby is screaming bloody murder, maybe I should check to make sure he/she is ok"? The parents are to blame. Not the dog. It was acting properly after all.

Oh, and I HATE how they say someone was MAULED by a dog in EVERY dog bite case. I doubt the baby was mauled. A puppy play biting too hard and rough, yes, mauled? No. Mauling is when a dog viciously attacks someone. You are walking down the street and a dog comes running up to you snarling and foaming at the mouth and attacks you repeatedly is mauling. And taking the pug out on a catch pole is a bit extreme if you ask me.

When I was in High School we had a litter of lab puppies wreaking havoc on our home for a few months. Besides those four puppies, we've had four other puppies go through my household in my lifetime. I would say that I have a really good grip on lab puppy behavior.

I'm sure most of you have seen puppies/dogs playing around with each other. They bite. I always have to remind myself that they aren't actually going to hurt each other when they play because it just looks so brutal sometimes. When they are puppies and too young to have learned that you can't play with people the same way...well it would make perfect sense to nip at the dangling legs of an unattended baby. The reaction from the baby would only seem like more fun and games to the poor dog.

This whole situation makes me sick. Blame was put on an animal when so much should rest squarely on every other person involved. I just hope that the poor puppy wasn't the only one to suffer consequences, especially since he didn't understand what he was doing.

Euthanizing an innocent puppy is not only ignorant but a horrible crime as puppies are not vicious. The true crime lies with the parents and those in the house. A puppy has razor sharp teeth and plays.. they know no boundaries until they are taught boundaries. I am not only enraged by the outcome of this but pray the mother and those in the house that day get what they deserve.
