Sept launch for bid to crack secrets of universe
Sept launch for bid to crack secrets of universe
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), housed in an underground tunnel 27 kilometers (17 miles) in circumference, will recreate conditions just after the Big Bang on September 10. It will seek to collide two beams of particles at close to the speed of light. picked by AfroMosHi 1 year ago

Damn, can't they wait destroying the Earth AFTER I get a girlfriend, marry her, have children and die at age 117 ?

I've said it before....

This thing frightens me. Oh, sure the physicists say "Oh, the chances of something bad happening are almost zero". Almost zero.. not good enough for me.

I'm only 27 ! How can I age 90 years in 34 days ?

Maybe if you build a large particle accelerator and mess around with quantum theory.

...oh.

Meh. I have faith in the physicists who are running the thing. If they say it is less than a tenth of a percent chance that is will produce a miniature black hole that destroys the planet, I say have at it. What we can learn is a lot for such a teeny risk.

And I think that I am actually way exaggerating on the percent as well. I heard an interview with one of the people involved and they are all having a huge laugh over how much of a deal is being made about this "doomsday scenario".

Plus, on the minuscule chance it actually DOES make a black hole, we will never even realize it.

So no big.

Try smoking Lucky Strikes.

Which is really messed up because it would be a major accomplishment.

Would that be 34 days at ground zero with a slow progression of destruction radiating outward? Or will this collision be an instantaneous end to all life as we know it? Boy. glad I took up smoking again. No worries.

Man's potential is quite frightening, but you can not deny that it is amazingly impressive. To think, actually being able to unlock the secrets of the universe; In the scale of things, how small we are as a race in comparison to a universe, that is a godlike feat.

I don't think we will learn anything. Most likely, there will only be more questions.

We could be solving real, material, human problems...but hey, look at this shiny new toy.

The elephants in the room are beginning to stink up the place.

It's a case of sitting back and enjoying the ride...if it destroys the earth then you'll be dead, and thusly you won't be around to care. If it does work then we're going to find out a lot of cool things. Or there is the chance that it works, but turns out to be a waste of time and money because nothing interesting happens. Either way, these particle collider experiments have been going on for years (albeit on a smaller scale) in America somewhere if i'm not mistaken.

I think they know what they're doing... in the strictest sense.

that is not the point. and though this may not be the finest example, this is an example of people essentially f**king around with my life.

A better example is that of our nation's leaders frequent attempts to provoke others into war, thus threatening my very existence...and this for no discernible or worthwhile reason.

The collider folks are no different...while the chance may be slim that the s**t hits the fan, I do not appreciate the fact that their little whim and jollies might prevent me from writing music, petting my dogs, whatever.

In both cases we have spoiled men that believe they do not have to care what effects their actions have.

True, I take back what I said then. Although there isn't much we can do about it now unfortunately :(

Edit: I dunno if the video has been posted previously on Plime, but search for "end day" on youtube and watch part 6

We'll just have to wait and see what "fate" (or scientific research) has in store for us. ;)
