This is matter of semantics, 45 seconds really, and in no way "experimental".

Many blessing to the parents of the donors for understand that in death their child could give someone else life. And KUDOS!!! to the brave team of doctors that asked for those precious seconds.

At least the parents of the 'donor' babies have something to feel good about now in the midst of their grief, knowing that their baby's heart beats on in the chest of another. What a heart-wrenching decision to make.

While research probably determined how long circulation would have to stop before most people could probably not be resuscitated, it's not a sure thing. I don't believe 45 seconds would make a difference either.

All I know is that if I were in the same situation as the donor parents, I think I would have made the same decision. Why keep my child on life support and prolong their suffering when I could let them go peacefully and save someone elses child. I truly hope I never have to make that type of decision. I would also donate any organ that could be used if, god forbid, something were to happen to my child. My husband already knows that any of my organs would be up for grabs if I were to die. I dont need them after I die, so might as well let someone else have them.

Huge kudos to the donor parents though. That would be one tough decision.

I've had a family member die this year and although he was not a child, the organs that were removed went to EIGHT different people to help save their lives. It is a shame that someone has to die before this can happen but making the decision basically before the person has died, even more so in the case of an infant, isn't an easy one to make.

The families of the children that died will take some comfort knowing that there aren't three more families going through the same situation because they made a tough decision. The families and the surgeons should be commended for their actions, they certainly shouldn't be attacked.

The procedure, known as donation after cardiac death, has been performed in adults. It is done at my hospital, in fact. Here's how it works:

The person (who is in intensive care) is taken to the operating room where life support is removed and then the transplant team takes over, removing the organs. Families accompany the patient all the way up to the door of the operating room (if they wish) to say their good-byes. The team provides the utmost respect and dignity for the patient.

IMO, the time interval between removal of life support and removal of organs is not much of an issue ethically if it is known that the person could not recover. I see how it's psychologically significant, esp. in infants, but as long as rigorous standards are established and maintained, there is no ethical conflict to me.
