Huh? I admit I haven't read the article yet, and I'll change my post if need be, what why in the world do they get special worldwide handling?

EDIT: Ok, I read it. My post hasn't changed.

Slow down guys lets be careful not to insult Islam while we ridicule the UN for bowing to a fascist front for a religion that supports treating women like cattle and anyone who doesn't believe the right thing like a bug to be squashed.

We wouldn't want to provoke them now would we?

Ok, this is a blog from a group whos mandate is to "eradicate Islamic extremism" from America in order to keep "American families safe."

I tried searching for something from the UN to back this up - or a least a reasoning for the decision rather than this rant from the Family Security Matters. Interestingly enough, all I found were a slew of other blogs with the *exact* same article.

It just smacks of strange. I still would like to get the UNs side of the story before I grab my burning pitchfork.

It happened in June

Trying to find link to decision/resolution, but the UN site isn't the easiest to search.

Here are a few more links

Basically they will not allow any criticism of religion during debates on human right atrocities. Although they don't specifically limit the ban to Islam, it was strictly Muslims who were loudly demanding this. Furthermore there isn't a lot of modern-day abuse of human rights being ordained by other religions.

The Human Rights committee is saying they are not qualified to discuss if killing a woman because she converted to a different religion than Islam, or spoke to a man is a violation of human rights if done under the guide of religion. If it is done just because, well then they will speak out against it. If it is done under the rule of "religious" law, then only that religion's scholars can determine if any of the multitude of human right violations dictated by 6th century laws are a violation of rights or not.

Man - what does it take to become a recognized religion?

I'm thinking of starting one up that says it's OK to invade Poland. That way the UN won't get involved.

This is just like giving these people the exclusive rights to discuss if they have a point or not - only worse because this concerns hurting people and it's not a joke; though Charles K. Johnson was a real person who actually believed the earth is flat...

The article in the original post is disgustingly biased, and trying to find facts from it is next to impossible.

While the issue itself is of some concern, the article does it's best to convince people to dismiss the whole issue as crazy right wing extremist bs propaganda.

From the original post:
They still allow criticism of other religions and their human rights violations, just not Islam.
This is simply incorrect.

I"m a pretty tolerant person, and, even on here, I've defended Islam and the UN numerous times, but on this occasion, I'd like to take this opportunity to tell the Council that I understand their position and accept it implicitly. I would also like to declare that we (the USA) will no longer allow debate on our military policy, which is just great since we'll be invading one of the countries on the Council next week. But remember guys, we have a right to our beliefs, and because we believe we should invade and enslave you, you are hereby banned from condemning it or debating it.

Any religion that says that you can rape women if they do not cover themselves is wrong. There's no argument to be had about this new rule, no matter how unenforceable it is. If it's okay to bash the catholic church, than god dammit I should be able to bash a bunch of disorganized arabs.
