I can't believe anyone wouldn't try to stop the guy, and I'm even more shocked that nobody even tried to help the victim after the attacker left. Disgusting.

Holy crap! I take Septa trains a few times a year. (It is a big train network but sheesh)

It is so weird to hear about stories that happen on, around, in the same places you live, work, play.

I hope they get this guy and at the very least get that kid away from him. I can't believe the little guy had to see that.

Bystanders stand by
Well, they are bystanders. By definition, they can't do much else. They just stand by. If they started doing something else they wouldn't be bystanders anymore.

To put the blame on the bystanders is totally out of line. They simply fell victim to their definition.

Thats just what I thought! How do you take that kind of abuse?!! Really, somebody tell me, b/c if I could take a hammer to the head and LIVE, I would be the ultimate badass.

I'm over here trying to think what could've been on the minds of those bystanders. I bet they are kicking themself in the a$$ riite now though. I cannot come to any logical reasons to stand there and not do anything to stop this attack. I mean he only had a hammer...even a knife would be different. But you cannot get stabbed with a hammer. he'd have to cock it bakk and swing. so yea i dont get it...

Seriously?
Let's look at this.

Cost vs. Reward
Your life vs. stranger's life

An easy decision, I'd say. Rather you than me, as they say.

Let's take a different angle.

Ok, we can't say they didn't realise what was going on.
Or that they didn;t interpret what was going on as an emergency.
But did they know what to do? Were any of them trained in tackling armed men who clearly dont give a f**k?
How many of them were trained by police in how to calm down violent criminals?

No, maybe it wasn't right to stand by, counting your blessings.
But that doesn't make humanity animals; it makes humanity human.
Until the will to die is greater than the will to live, bystanders will continue to stand by.

Oh, and Smarty: Only a hammer, eh? Lets see you take a hammer blow to the head and laugh about it. A hammer is still a lethal weapon, sharp edge or not.

He was lucky; fared better than the man who was attacked in the same manner on a Greyhound about a month ago.

I can tell you right now, if you see a man beating the crap out of another guy with a hammer, and he's facing AWAY from you, you can take him. As he's initiating another blow, you punch him the ear, then in the back of the head. The first blow to disorient him, the second to knock him out. Basic fighting.
