I'd say your point is pretty conclusive with regard to the credibility of the number-of-stab-wounds thing. But as to the general credibility of the article, you're all missing a hugely important point: this was published by the Sun - arguably the worst, least factual, and most deliberately sensationalist of all the british tabloid "newspapers".

I really wanted to read this article for the last two hours at work. I Haven't read it yet, but I'm quite dissapointed by the comments so far, I must say. Tragluk said it all.

By the way, my source on this is the Marilyn Manson autobiography; he's a card carrying member of the Church of Satan. They are Satanists, too. And they don't pray to Satan; it's about recognizing yourself as your own god. In an explicit sense, just to differnetiate from atheists.
Also, the only source you have to say how many stab wounds was the murderer, who claimed 666. And why not? It fits nicely.
Unlike in normal news stories about this sourt of stuff I haven't seen a single person just say something like 'that's terrible that those real, actual people have been killed. (Up to) eight parents are grieving the despicable loss of their children, and I feel so sorry for them.'
This is a hideous thing. These aren't satanists, they're barely people. They're f**ked up. To even consider killing, burning and eating people, you have to be.

As sick as it actually was, the claims are sure to be exaggerated by severe numbers. All I can say is that there was so much doubt cast around the original article that is made things unclear. The victims were missing since June, so their bodies would've already been badly decomposed so it is only believed that parts of them were eaten.

The Sun are always famous for reporting first, finding facts later and painting the worst picture they can.

So did it cross the mind of anyone reading this that figuring out if someone had been stabbed 666 times - then burned and then eaten is impossible?

That has already been discussed heavily in this comment thread; in fact a link has already been provided to a more reliable reporting source, which clarifies that the people who committed the act reported the number.
That said, I thought it was fake when I first read it too, it was way too sensationalized and it seemed like there were way too many assumptions regarding what happened, which made it seem completely fictitious.

It would be wasteful for them to stab the bodies 666 times and not eat them. They're satanists, not anti-environmentalists.

I assure you these people were not literal Satanists.
