Dude, dude, dude.

Being an a*****e to someone is no way to get them to change. In fact, trying to rip someone's religious beliefs away from them only makes them hold on tighter. The only way to get someone to give up their religious beliefs is to get them to understand that they don't need them, or are even being hurt by their beliefs.

Just buy her a copy of "Letter to a Christian Nation".

This guy is acting just like the worst of the fundamentalists.

That being said, it is possible that we aren't hearing the whole story. The article does suggest some sort of psychological problem on the part of the atheist. Or perhaps the Christian woman did something we aren't being told about.

Or, it's up to each and everyone of us to make sure we're all programmed with the same beliefs. If not we'll smear dog feces in your face. Yeah.

All those silly religious people...If only someone would go on a crusade to enlighten them and give true understanding, then they could be as intelligent as the rest of the world.

I personally think that belief in things unseen and unmeasurable is "silly" (i.e. irrational), but the use of feces never makes for a sound argument.

Fanatics of any stripe irritate me. Hell, I'm even suspicious of fanatical sport enthusiasts. :P

I'm glad I never ran into this guy when I left home.

Even though I knew something was dreadfully wrong years ago in Christian Fundamentalism, getting a lot of harassment and insults over being in it didn't help change my mind at all. If anything, it delayed my escape and made me hold on more. Even attempts to persuade didn't work, especially coming from people whose behavior screamed that they believed they were superior to those "stupid Christians". What finally got me out of it? People of many different religious perspectives (from other forms of Christianity to atheism) who actually gave a damn and cared about me. Love really does win out -- at least it did for me. When the "lib'rulls" and the "heathens" treated me better than my "brothers" did, I got the hint and left.

When you said the guy was acting "like the worst of the Fundamentalists", you're not kidding. I realized once I was in a more moderate place in my life that even though the Fundies and the militant atheists agreed on nothing, they used exactly the same tactics against their real or perceived enemies. I don't care now what a person believes. If they're decent human beings, awesome. If they're acting like extremists, I'm outta there.

The idea that the woman may have brought some of it on herself could be a possibility. I knew of plenty of Fundies who would say some of the most outrageous and hateful things, justify it with Scripture (either ripped out of context or seriously overapplied), and then claim persecution if their target got angry. The best revenge is not to fight back, but to be exceptionally nice and decent, and even bless them. I did that to one group, and they got so out of whack that I had to stop or at least one would have had a coronary.

/moderate Christian with some beliefs currently in flux
/enjoys Reform synagogues
/seeks the radical middle and detests extremism

I had fun with JWs once. They had the nerve to wake me up from a much-needed nap. I tried to be as nice as I could, told them that I already knew about their stuff, but the guys in a certain apartment down the hall might be interested.

Said guys were Mormon missionaries. It was all I could do not to go out and watch the fireworks :)

/Mormon missionaries actually make some of the best neighbors. Nobody says you have to agree.
