Couple Too Fat For Airplane To Take Off
Couple Too Fat For Airplane To Take Off
Alan and Jan Coupe were understandable embarrassed when they were told that due to their excessive weight they needed to sit at opposite ends of the plane so as to even out the load. The good news is this incident inspired the couple to drop a combined 175 pounds. picked by bernardblack 1 year ago

FYI, 1 stone = 14 pounds

so they did have a combined weight of 532 Pounds

thanks for letting us know the translation from stone to pound I was trying to figure that out myself.

Even so, If you divide equally that is just over 250 lbs each. Now, I have been on numerous flights where there were people weighing more than that. I myself weigh around 220 (and can stand to lose some weight) but I have never been told to leave a flight because the plane couldn't take off with me on it. Something tells me there is more to the story. I am glad something good came out of it and they were able to use it as a somewhat positive driving force for them.

They say it was a 'decent sized' aircraft, but that's not very precise. I've been asked to move on a flight because it was mostly empty, and they have to balance out the load--had nothing to do with MY specific weight, it was just that there weren't any seats filled on the other side of the plane. This was on a prop job, only holds about 30 people, and with only 10 people on it, weight distribution is important!

They weren't told to leave the plane. It is just, as Maven pointed out, the weight distribution which was a concern. 500+ pounds isn't too much weight, except when it is in one spot.

I have to give it up to them for losing the weight instead of making a whining mess of the thing. I have a strong feeling that had this happened in America, it would have resulted in a big fat lawsuit.

No pun intended.

What's the big deal here? The fat people were weighing down one side of the plane. Maybe the pilot didn't want the thing to spiral uncontrollably towards their charted destination! Can you blame him? Safety first, people!

Can't really fight physics. It's unfortunate that they had to go through that situation, but I am really impressed with them. Weight loss is one of the most difficult things that I've ever done and that much weight lost is really cool. Good for them.

The big deal is they took that incident as the push they needed to lose weight.

It is a good news story

If this had happened in the US, you know the airline would have been sued.

I've been asked to move on "decent sized planes" to balance weight, and I've also been asked to get off small planes (beavers) because my weight would be too much. I'm 130lbs - moving on planes is just simple physics.
