The Red Menace: What We Were Told to Fear Before Islam
The Red Menace: What We Were Told to Fear Before Islam
What were we told to fear before radical Islam appeared? In the fifties and sixties the perceived threat was from communism. As one enemy fades another appears. picked by Bornbad 1 year ago

Were we ever wrong... Communism (in countries that adopted it) has produced some fantastic results.

Oh wait... never mind.

It seems so silly looking back on it all. The Western world didn't have at all the right political climate for communism to look even remotely attractive to most people, but I guess nothing unites people like a common enemy.

My mom used to tell me stories about how scared they all were of "the Russians." She was extra scared because her grandmother's sister married a Russian man and here last few, heavily-censored letters from the USSR to Canada described everyone starving to death. She was afraid of the same thing happening here, though didn't fully comprehend it all as she was only a girl herself then.

I don't think Islam is something we're told to fear, but I think this general sentiment is far more prevalent in the US than here.
