Scientists Develop Solar Cells With a Twist
US researchers have found a way to make efficient silicon-based solar cells that are flexible enough to be rolled around a pencil and transparent enough to be used to tint windows on buildings or cars. picked by AutumnLotus 1 year ago

This is an amazing development. If these can pump out enough energy, we could be looking at the end of the energy crisis.

I have to wonder, though, why would you make them transparent? Every ray of light that goes through is untapped energy. I understand the use of covering buildings with them, but doesn't that mean that they can't be use for things like roofs? Just throwing that out there. Any one with an EE degree know?

Minimal conversion costs - got a window? You've got the necessary framework.

It may also be (and this is just conjecture) that they're only using a fraction of the spectrum for energy generation, so there's not need to block the rest.

For example, and this is wishful thinking, but would make them that bit cooler, if they relied on UV light, not only would they generate electricity they'd help prevent skin cancer.

And probably read stories to orphans at the weekend.
