The virus causes haemorrhagic disease - meaning it can cause internal and external bleeding. The first victim was a woman from Zambia flown to South Africa for treatment. A paramedic who accompanied her and a nurse from the clinic where she was taken also died.

Genetic testing indicates the virus is a new type of arenavirus - a large family of viruses that include the germs that cause Lassa fever and the mouse-borne lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, said Dr Ian Lipkin of Columbia University in New York.
I really hope that doesn't mean they're studying it in New York.

I definitely see some kind of I am Legend-esque scene playing out in my head.

I thought that too! Hey don't bring that stuff here! Germ warfare mean ANYTHING to you!? I did notice that "appears" and "indicates" were used a lot. Meaning, they don't know yet.

And Badbud, thanks for the tip. Bleeding from every pore is one of the FEW things that would actually cause me to go to the ER--a place I truly detest...mainly due to the germs.

I actually did a report on this in school. Its called Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever. It starts out with symptoms like the flu for the first 7 days and then after that it goes full scale.

The messed up thing is its only curable up to about 3 days. Afterwards you're done for. Its highly contagious and virtually indectable during the first few days so people don't realize how serious it is until its too late.

"Outbreak" was loosely based on the disease
