In exchange for candy, children got an electric toothbrush, money, and a sense of giving to those who give to our country every day. All the candy is being sent to troops overseas.

So, it is not okay for kids to have cavities but the troops can? Those troops that may not be able to brush their teeth regularly because of the situation they are in?

I see the heart behind this. I really do. I just don't think it is the best thing that could be sent to the troops.

It's no worse than our troops giving candy bars to native kids in Afghanistan and Iraq. Maybe they can pass on some of our kids' candy, and it'll form a favorable impression, and contribute to world peace.

I know, I'm an idealist. No harm in that.

IMO.
Not being a smarty, but the troops are fighting a war. Tooth decay isn't that high on the injury scale, and items that remind you of home are very important for morale.

(Plus they have toothbrushes to prevent decay when they get back from patrols.)
