Purified urine to be astronauts' drinking water
Purified urine to be astronauts' drinking water
As NASA prepares to double the number of astronauts living aboard the International Space Station, nothing may do more for crew bonding than a machine being launched aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on Friday.

It's a water-recycling device that will process the crew's urine for communal consumption. picked by AutumnLotus 1 year ago

It's not that big of a deal.

Most people living in drier parts of North America (i.e. the American SW) have likely unknowingly drank 100% recycled* or "pre-sipped" water at some point in time when it was exceptionally dry.

*If it weren't for wastewater treatment plants putting water back into the watersheds during the driest times, there would be almost no water for downstream communities to withdraw.

I can see it now... a space refrigerator with little bottles inside labled: John's pee, Margaret's pee, Yoshi's pee, and Vladimir's pee.

If you gotta drink it, you might as well drink your own brand.

Seeing as how there's only so much water on the planet, and that there's been humans and animals around for hundreds of thousands of years. I have to wonder if any water we drink hasn't been through someone or something at least once.

I thought they were doing this since Gagarin. I mean on all space trips, not just NASA. I definitely remember reading about this kind of water recycling in spacecrafts before 1981.

Yup. They'll call it spc|wtr, or something like that, and make it really trendy.

Let's beat them to it!

Agreed. I remember learning about this back in elementary school (primary school, for you non-Americans). I thought this was commonplace.

I hear that though it is purified, it still retains some of the taste, though. :p

Fact is, urine from a healthy person is sterile, unless you have kidney or urinary tract infection.

At one time, doctors would swish urine around in their mouths to check for sweetness, helping in the diagnosis of diabetes.

Urine is salty. When I was 5 a boy gave me what he told me was "lemonade." It did not taste like lemonade!

It makes sense, though. A readily available source.
