I actually enjoyed Ashton Kuchner's astute comment on Real Time:

"Maybe the oil companies should bail out the Big 3."

I like it, as long as the costs wouldn't just get passed on to us. If you want us to use a LOT of your product, support the mechanisms that cause us to do so! That seems like economics working well to me....
