Wal-Mart Worker Killed in Shopper Stampede When Doors Opened at 5am
Wal-Mart Worker Killed in Shopper Stampede When Doors Opened at 5am
A 34-year-old Wal-Mart worker died Friday morning after "a throng of shoppers . . . physically broke down the doors" and knocked him to the ground as the crowd pushed its way into the Long Island, NY store. A pregnant woman was knocked down and sent to the hospital. Another local article with additional details.

Just saw this on "breaking news".

Attention Wal-Mart shoppers: come for the bargains, get killed by the mob.

They don't call it a maul for nothing!

I was just kidding with my BF about running over to the stores with all the crazed shoppers when I heard this report.

I wonder if people would act like other herding animals in that situation. Might the worker have been alright if he had quickly climbed up on a high place? I think it's terrible that he was killed, but part of me wonders if human stampeders are just as dumb as any other.

I find things like this just sickening, and it erodes my faith in humanity. Is getting cheap (insert product here) so important people are willing to kill for it?

We're being warned that banking systems/credit cards might be overwhelmed today so shopping might not be the brightest idea unless it's with cash.

I'm so glad I'm here today and not there.

I hope the security tapes give them enough to make an arrest and get a conviction. People are disgusting.

On a lighter note, I saved about $150 shopping on line this morning, and no one got hurt, although a number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

This news reminds me of a quote from Men in Black: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it"

Mass of people equals dumb mob.

"They kept shopping. It's not right. They're savages," Cribbs said.
Couldn't agree more.

Our Walmart is open 24 hours. 24 hours = no opening time = no stampede.

Problem is that it was a stampede. It was a huge group, all pushing forward at once. The people who trampled the guy may not have even been pushing. There's no one person to hold responsible.

I've been in a situation almost like that. I was in the middle of a huge group, and I had no control. Like the people behind me, I was actually trying to stop and push backward, but there was just an uncontrollable flow of people. It was almost like pushing against an avalanche. I was being pushed forward into the people in front of me, who were being pushed into the people in front of them. It was actually scary. Before that day I never believed that someone could be killed in a human stampede.

That doesn't change the fact that I think it's disgusting that this happened at Walmart on black Friday. Talk about a senseless death. This happened because people were in a rush to get cheap f**king Christmas presents. Kinda makes me loose another chunk of faith in humanity.

Doesn't this happen every year? Injuries, if not a death? I say that not to minimize this, since it's a horrific thing to have happen, but because I honestly don't know if it's the first death.

I avoid crowds. This is why.

How much do you want to bet that same Wal-Mart will turn around and say that sales are down and shoppers just aren't spending as much this year.

Too busy trampling the hired help I guess.

I was in a situation once like that. My friends and I were going to a Grateful Dead concert at Nassau Coliseum. It was general admission seating, so the sooner you got in, the best spot you got.

When the doors opened, we were starting to get crushed by the crowds up against the glass windows of the stadium. I was really scared that the glass would break and people would get hurt. Mercifully, nothing went wrong and we all got stoned and had a great time.

I'm still shaking my head over this incident at Walmart.
