Like...when you're walking along a hallway and see someone you know casually walking towards you, at what point in time do you wave?

You wave when you see them. If they're good friends/acquantainces, an additional verbal greeting as you pass each other may be called for.

What if you see them and make eye contact really far apart? This has happened to me. I just awkwardly try to pretend that I didn't see anything and then pretend to notice them, when they get comfortably closer.

I think awkward rule #4 (http://www.awkwardrules.net/2008/12/01/awkward-rule-4-nodhi-relationships/) addresses this point. Thanks for the linking to my blog here, I didn't realize that so many others had the same situations/problems as me =)!
