Asimov's Foundation to be a movie?
Asimov's Foundation to be a movie?
New Line founders Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne are developing an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's 1951 novel Foundation, the first in Asimov’s classic space opera saga. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Shaye said, “our idea is to renew the worldwide audience’s appetite for the story” but he added that it is a complex novel, "this is not a script you can knock out in six months." picked by psycmoe 12 months ago

The Foundation saga is one of our society's most under-rated stories.

Many people assume they wouldn't like it, that it would contain too much SciFi, too much "lasergun cowboys and indians" stuff. And yet, such a different (but yet recognisable) history of mankind (yet, in a possible future..) is fascinating without any strange technologies.

I can honestly say it has affected the way I look at the interaction between communities, countries, people and generations. Quite apart from any religious or spiritual ideas that one may or not have, the saga (to me) strongly suggests reasons for a moral responsibility to our children to ensure a positive development of our species and its home.

Sounds very pompous, I know, but I guess Asimov's story provides a massive background that creates a perspective for our own short-lived existence.

I hope the movie does him justice, it would be really great if this could evolve into a true saga, along the lines of Star Wars, but less based on technology and inter-species warfare...

I adore Asimov, I agree with you, and you're well named.

I love Asimov, too, but after the way "Bicentennial Man" was mangled by Hollywood, I'm afraid what a movie based on the "Foundation" series would be like. Although I have to admit that I might enjoy a movie based on his Elijah Bailey & R. Daneel Olivaw novels (as long as they didn't take too much liberty with the plot).

I'm hoping this is done well because I truly love Foundation; the series is my favorite of all of Asimov's fiction.

a movie? I would love it but doubt it could be done well. It is much too complex. Something like this requires a television series that can take the time to really explore the books.

a 2 hour movie!? impossible.

5 seasons of 13 1 hour long episodes? Definitely.
