Canada's government faces an upset Posted: 12 months ago by chinook
The three parties who failed to win our last election seven weeks ago are attempting to seize power from the Conservative government that won the election. Unless the government is suspended, the new coalition government could be in power as soon as Monday.

I am so mad at this. If this happens, I think I'll spend my vacation in Ottawa throwing eggs and assorted frozen vegetables at politicians.

This is not how we voted. If this works out, if M. Dion is our new prime minister, there will be epic tensions between the West and the Rest. No representation for us! I don't want to see my hard-earned tax dollars going to bail out ailing industries!! Annihilation of our industries, of course without any promise of aid. Of course. I think I'm going to have to write a letter to... the GG??? or someone to voice my opinion on this.

I'm so passionate about this that going to Ottawa to give the coalition my piece of mind doesn't seem like a bad idea. Gah!! What are they thinking!! Mme Jean, PLEASE let the government be suspended and the budget revised, or else another election held. I DO NOT want to be led by the LOSER of the last election!!!

what a f**king mess canadian politics are in. we have one party on the right and way too many on the left. The parties on the left get more votes then the one on the right, but they are spread between the three. Most people who vote for any on the left (liberal, ndp, green) want ANYTHING except conservative. We really need election reform to go through, where instead of voting for one party we would choose the order we place them in. this would royally f**k over the conservatives so they will fight it to the end. then we have the f**king bloc in there, god I hate them with a passion.
/rant

I am totally opposed to this too, maybe we could ride to ottawa together?

Write to the Governor General about this. It takes 10 minutes, all you need is a pen, paper and envelope. No stamps required!!

That's what I'd doing right now. I did a lot of parliament stuff when I was a bit younger. It is generally agreed that one letter represents roughly one thousand voices. Do it!!

I don't understand how they can just seize power? Is this a coup? I'm baffled.

Well to explain it you need to know a little about how canadian politics work. We have multiple political parties (the conservatives, the liberals, the ndp, green and the bloc). They all have a leader and attempt to win as many seats in the house of commons as possible (this is what the public votes on). The party with the most seats forms the government and their leader is the Prime Minister. If the party has more seats then ALL the other parties combined they have a majority government, if they don't then they have a minority government. Currently we have a minority government.

What is happening here(as I understand it, correct me if I'm wrong please) is that the liberals, ndp, and the bloc are forming a coalition, combining there seats and stealing the conservatives minority government away. They will not have an easy time getting away with this, they need a way better reason and I think there are many canadians that would be opposed to including the bloc in there (*curses loudly*).

Unless they merged to form one party (won't happen), it'll be just a coalition, and they will have to convince the Her Excellency the Governor General that this coalition is in the best interest of all Canadians. Then she may grant them the power to govern us.

Which is why I'm urging every Canadian who is not comfortable with the balance of power in parliament, and thus our nation's fate, in the hands of the separatist Bloc Quebecois *curses loudly (for real)* to write to Mme. Jean and express these opinions!

Coalitions are the norm back home. If a government is formed via coalitions, it's just as much (if not more) representative of what Canadians voted than the minority government we have now.

As much as the instability of a coalition government scares me, I have to agree that it is more representative of how Canadians voted last election.

I'd be much more supportive of this or any proposed coalition in Canada if it didn't leave a separatist party with so much power.

I'm going to get flamed for this, but I don't care.
The Conservatives screwed up. Big time. The other parties aren't just trying to seize control for no reason.
I would rather have Stephane Dion in power as interim PM until the Spring than have an arrogant right wing politician for 4 more years...

Harper needs to step down.

In my opinion.

Of course, I am a separatist, and a British-Columbian, but still!!

I think that's the issue here. He messed up before and needs to give it up. The fact that this isn't a democratic election is just a sidenote, but unfortunately that's what most people are whining about. Not to downplay the passion of anyone interested, but there's no sense in empty letter-writing.

I'd love nothing more than to set Quebec free. We could spend our tax dollars on much more wonderful things (maybe make tuition everywhere in Canada as cheap as it is in Quebec??), and we wouldn't have to listen to them whine.

hmm...

well it's all about what you believe in I suppose.
I am, as I've said, a separatist, and an arts minded person, so for me Harper is pretty much the worst PM we could have. But at the same time things might be just as bad with someone else.

That didn't answer my question. What did he (and the tories) do, specifically, to "screw up"?

Belonging to the Conservatives isn't screwing up, that's just the party.....
