So if someone had the surgery and persistently experienced the phantom limb, does that mean they were mistaken as to what they thought their gender should be?

Avoiding all other issues with that, that's not even possible. Re-making the phallus would result in a tiny little thing that could not become erect seeing as this is a post-op MtF, and thus there's a lot less material to actually work with as opposed to an FtM.
There's a reason there's a lot of psychological testing before one can actually do that. No going back.

I'm actually curious about the last bit of the paragraph. From my knowledge, only a certain portion of the brain is feminized in an MtF transsexual, and I've never heard of it affecting that... It just seems odd, since many MtFs opt not to do the surgery and live fairly happy lives.
