Why I celebrate Christmas, by the world's most famous atheist
Why I celebrate Christmas, by the world's most famous atheist
Scientist and atheist Richard Dawkins has admitted he does celebrate Christmas - and enjoys singing traditional Christmas carols each festive season.

HYPOCRITE! (Irony for those who might miss it)

So... you don't celebrate xmas?

I really don't see a problem here. I don't believe a lot of things that are traditionally celebrated on christmas, but that doesn't stop me from buying gifts for my family and friends, and enjoying a get together.

I hate christmas music though.

Well yeah, you've made it clear that you don't have a magic man, so do you not buy presents for your kids?

Yeh, I celebrate Christmas, in a non-religious way. Christmas is a pagan celebration adopted and adapted by Christians so I have no qualms about it :)

Btw, the hypocrite part of the description was being ironic, just to clear that up

Yep, I agree. I've had this discussion with a Christian recently, which is why I posted this when I came across it.

Anyone can celebrate Christmas, or the Christmas season. As DoggyLives did say, much of the traditions we partake in during Christmas has pagan roots. Many may choose to go the full on pagan route too and celebrate the solstice or Yule or something like that (I've known some to do so). Being a Christian, while I'll like having a tree and whatnot, I do appreciate some of the more traditional aspects of the Christmas celebration, though, myself.

Likewise, we celebrate Christmas, give gifts, have Father Christmas deliver some gifts, have Christmas tree and sing Christmas carols.

Christmas is what you make out of it. No one owns the rights to it, not Christians and not the pagans who started it all. It can be celebrated - like we do - without giving Jesus any place in it.

It's perfectly fine for Christians to celebrate it as the Christ's birthday (as inaccurate as this is date-wise *), and it's perfectly fine for agnostics (or atheists, muslims, pagans or whoever) to celebrate it as a family event about giving and recieving.

The real life Scrooges and Grinches of Christmas are those few (but loud) people who attempt to define for everyone what Christmas is about and who's allowed to celebrate it and how. To those I say go jump in a lake, for the rest of the world, Merry Christmas.

* One of my nieces was born on Christmas day. She celebrates her birthday in the summer. Dates are just dates, they have no ultimate importance.

Would you mind if that was changed to, say, 2009-01-01 instead? It's the event itself that counts :)

Sure...celebrate...whatever. My point was this...get your own name, stop stealing from us. Do like George's Dad did...make up your own. I actually liked that "A Festivus for the rest of us". Makes more sense. We renamed ours, the African American's renamed theirs...get original.

Who are you calling a hypocrite? Last I heard, before the Christians made it their own, Christmas was composed of many non-christian celebrations.

Unless of course Baby Jesus = Santa Claus and the reindeer are actually camels...

HEY! Where is my Myrth?

Lol, you're either being ironic/funny or dumb as f**k, I can't work out which.

I'll go with dumb as f**k for now. By "Ours" I presume you mean Christians, yet we've established that it's not a Christian holiday.

"You" stole it off the pagans. What is your big problem with non-believers celebrating Christmas?

It's akin to me telling Christians to stay the f**k away from science.

You're either being ironic or moronic, I'm yet to figure out which.

No. "You" didn't come up with your own name. In most languages, the name Christians call their celebration is "stolen" from the pre-christian tradition.

I can call my celebration whatever I wish. In English, I choose to call it Christmas, because that's what the name that the Christians stole translates to.

You're probably right...CHRISTians stole that name CHRISTmas from those other CHRISTians???? You have your history way off...let me see other languages I speak...Krismasi (Swahili), Christmas (English)[Ok,so I only speak two languages...cheap I know...although Krismasi is the same in any Bantu language...so that covers about 1/3 of all Africans] The original holiday on December 25th that Christmas is supposed to be named after (according to what you say) Saturnalia. Yep...totally stole the name.

In Nordic languages Christmas is called Jul/Joulu (Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Danish and Finnish (my language)). The celebration predates Christianity in those countries.

I guess you just choose to fail to understand. In any case, you don't see me yelling at Christians for "stealing" the name of Christmas. I don't see how you think you have the right to complain about other people reusing the already stolen name.

It's like going to the police to complain that some thugs stole the car you stole from someone else the week before.

Christianity is based on the Bible, yes?

Then please, tell me in which Chapter and Verse Christmas is discussed, and the ways it should be celebrated identified.

Go on, I'll wait.

Anything about trees? Lights? Gifts? Anything that was NOT scavenged from another culture or religion?
