Only took us 200 years to get here... and the Abstinence only crowd is still arguing their way is best... I love the line that kids are given "Accurate information regarding condoms"... which I believe goes as follows...

"Don't buy them because you aren't having sex anyway".

It amazes me that people actually think that 1950's attitude (a la Leave it to Beaver) ever really existed in any great amount. "Oh yes Ward, we were all well behaved before 1964. We never drank or engaged in sex until we were married")

Hell, the first humans "out of the trees" probably just lost their balance while doing the bump&grind.

Until we forget our halcyon days that never were and deal with reality (i.e. teens are going to have sex) these issues will remain.

When I was a teenage boy, if I started dating a girl who took an abstinence pledge I would consider it a personal challenge. Except for the obvious fact that I didn't date girls like that or even girls with overbearing and protective parents. Too many fish in the sea to date girls with Moray Eel parents hiding behind every rock, tree, bedroom closet door, and garage. But yeah, abstinence pledges are a joke.

I'm reminded of the two scenes from Back to the Future, the first in 1985 where his mother tells him how when she was younger she never did anything wrong, didn't drink or smoke or sit in parked cars with boys. And the other scene when he's on a "date" with her in 1955 and he finds out what she was really like.

I also think that leaving it to beaver is the problem. They need to really consider pulling out.

Why is this still and issue at all? I don't really understand the debate anymore. Abstinence programs are just silly. I remember every girl in one of my classes in 11th grade discussing their vow to remain virgins until marriage (not a public declaration really as much as just talking to each other). By the end of 12th grade, not only had every one of them broken the pledge, but had usually broken it phenomenally with some freak Penthouse Letters version of de-virginitizing. Oh well

It's an issue because the government currently doesn't fund true sex education, just abstinence education, if you can call it that.

Pretending kids won't figure out how to have sex if they aren't taught it in school is apparently a sign of good morals and firm religious values, for some.

I told my self I wasn't having sex 'till marriage. I didn't make a formal pledge thingy. Anyways I still plan to not have sex 'till marriage.

I made a pledge not to have sex until marriage. Well, I didn't really make a pledge so much as all the girls turned me down, so I'm going with that pledge excuse for as long as I can. Oh, and I'm living a life of poverty for very lofty reasons as well. Pay no mind that I just don't get paid a lot.

There are still some morals and values out there, I hope I taught that to my children, and if/when they decide to have sex I hope I also taught them protection. I was one of the hold outs and didn't have sex until I was married (I was 23 years old, not so old by today's standards, but still a rare thing for being a virgin at that age anyway.) I feel it was right for me, but not saying it's right for everyone, though marriage is going on 25 years in July, so I know I picked the right man! :)

How about a celibacy pledge? I have been pretty celibate for a while, maybe I can just say I made a pledge...

Unfortunately, the converse is not true. Pledging that you will get laid does not mean that you are going to get some.
