There are many instances of people piling trash around their living quarters to an extreme.

My brother is a building agent and he had an elderly woman tenant who could barely open the door to her apartment, she had newspapers and trash piled up everywhere. She saved every piece of trash. Even her bathroom was so filled with trash that she couldn't use the toilet. She collected her waste in jars and kept the jars. She had about one foot of space on her bed to sleep.

When my brother entered the apartment, he tried going through the maze and his shoe came off. He didn't have enough room to bend to retrieve it and needed to back out of the apartment to turn around to enter again to get his shoe.

It took a crew over a week to clear out the apartment. There were mice and roaches everywhere.

When he showed me the pictures, I gagged.

There is a tenant that lived across the courtyard from me in my old building that lives like this. She owns 2 apartments. When the building makes her clean out one, she just moves it to the other.

It's very sad.

I'm actually kinda worried my mom will end up like this (though not this extreme) if certain things happen as she gets older...

One day when we get REALLY heavy snow i want to try this and tunnel to peoples houses. Does it remind anyone else of a challenge on the crystal maze?

Compulsive hoarding is a fairly common mental problem, which usually afflicts older people. Well, that's who you usually see in the paper anyway--maybe it just gets worse with age.

My mother's friend suffers from it, as well as other OCD-related symptoms. Mom got the city involved, and helped her clean out the place, and get on some meds. Her dog had died weeks before, and she was keeping the corpse in the freezer. Not because she knew the county was supposed to pick up dead animals, but because the dead dog was no different to her than last week's TV Guide.

I saw her over the holidays, and she seems much better.

He appears to have died happy within an affectionate community. With no next of kin, what will happen to his horde and property?

Normally if there are no next of kin and there is no will detailing how the estate is to be disposed ownership/responsibility transfers to the local government.

They certainly have their work cut out for themselves. It appears that the home will have to be demolished. It is doubtful that they can make the building livable again.
