Inside the mind of an autistic savant
Inside the mind of an autistic savant
Autistic savant Daniel Tammet shot to fame when he set a European record for the number of digits of pi he recited from memory (22,514). For afters, he learned Icelandic in a week. But unlike many savants, he's able to tell us how he does it. picked by drogue 11 months ago

Has anyone ever considered giving this guy a government position? He seems to be able to outdo just about everyone.

Tammet '12!

Daniel Tammet is awesome. The documentary about him gives me chills.

Who else wanted to slap the researcher who messed with pi?

He really is a very interesting person. He's an incredible example of the complexity of the human mind, and some of the wonderful things it's capable of.
I also love that he sounds like a really wonderful person. Hell, his last statement is something reminiscent of why I really liked Asimov.

And Roark, the only problem is that he isn't an a*****e. That's an essential quality in politics.

He's awesome. I'm completely fascinated by savants. Kim Peek is amazing too. He's the guy they modeled Rain Man after. I've watched pretty much every video on youtube about savants. Incredible.

Funniest one I came across was a guy who got hit in the head with a baseball and now remembers the exact weather for every day since it happened.

This is a great read. I really do think I'd like to read his book.

My son is an autistic, but not savant. However, I really wish I could find someone who could look in his head and tell me how it works. If you ask him why he does something a certain way, his response is "I dont know".

He just turned 8yo and can read anything you put in front of him and is a whiz at math. However, he has no reading comprehension. He could read you Gone With The Wind, and couldn't tell you anything that happend afterward. The same goes for math problems that are written. Ask him what 32+36 is, and he'll tell you. However, ask him "If bobby has eight apples and sarah gives him seven more apples, how many apples does bobby have all together"....he can't answer it.

I'd give anything to know how his mind works so I could deal with him and understand him better.

That's the way my son is. He's 10 and has Asperger's. He gets so frustrated in school when they have to "show their work" in math. He can tell you the answer, but he has no idea how he got it.
