i now take back all my comments regarding the stupidity of having a seat cushion floatation device when nothing larger than a book ever survives a water crash anyway.
it is amazing to see all those people standing on the wing and the plane floating in one piece.
I was in an emergency landing once with US Fear at LaGuardia. Great timing. Friday afternoon around 5pm. Rush hour. Closed down the entire airport and we were told to grab our ankles.
We were on a short flight back from Norfolk, VA. I said to the woman next to me "Aren't you glad we both ordered 2 drinks now?"
They did about 3 fly byes over the control tower trying to see if the landing gear was down. Turns out it was down, but no indication that it was locked. They put the plane down as far away as they could, just in case. Mercifully, we landed fine.
«suebe : On the local coverage, I only saw one guy with a backpack.
I would have grabbed my purse and let the luggage sink.
The plane is now anchored, still floating, all the way downtown by Battery Park.
Just this morning I heard that the ferries weren't doing their runs (not until at least Tuesday) because the Hudson had so much ice on it and that they were going to bring in ice breakers so commercial traffic could still make it up river.
Your story of the emergency landing sounds familiar, how long ago was that, I think I remember seeing that on the news. The plane was in the air over the airport for quite some time before it finally took the chance and landed as I recall. The pilot did a good job on that one too.

Oh that was about 1990... The pilot did a good job. I don't know if it hit the news since it took us so long to get back to the terminal because they needed to tow us. By the time I got home - at that time about 5 minutes from LGA, the news was over.
I also saw the report about no ferries yesterday. The water temp today was 42. Windchill temp 10/11.
My Mom told me about this, so I came here knowing I would find the story. I was sooo happy to know all made it. I actually shouted, YES! I am a horrible passenger when it comes to flying. I totally white knuckle even the smoothest of flights.
I know this is stupid, but all I could think of was how so many people told me it was silly to buy a ticket for my infant, so I would be able to use her car seat and buckle her in the last time we flew with her. Their logic was that "If anything happens no one's going to survive anyways", but in cases like this of a hard landing- imagine what would happen to a baby (or even other passengers- a 15 pound projectile is nothing to sneeze at) if they hit the water and her parent couldn't hold on to her.
I guess that's the mother in me- I hear a story like this and my brain goes right to wondering if there were kids or babies on board, and if they were buckled in.
