 Top 10 Myths about Cannabis
Top 10 Myths about Cannabis
Cannabis is an ancient drug, used throughout history for medical, magical, and pleasurable purposes. Thanks to the scare-tactics of propaganda in the 1960s and 1970s, there are many myths surrounding the drug - this list intends to put things straight once and for all. picked by equinox 10 months ago

At first glance, I thought the title was "Top 10 Myths about Cannibals".

Now THAT would have been an interesting story.

1. "after taking the drug some people can experience panic, paranoia, and fright"

2. "Of course, abuse of any intoxicating substance over long periods will reduce a person’s ability to function normally, but cannabis is no better or worse."

3. "Laboratory tests have shown that cannabis (When intoxicated) diminishes the short term memory."

4. "Users of high strength drugs such as heroin or LSD are also statistically more likely to have used cannabis in the past"

These 'facts' were taken from the above list. Although each of these are downplayed in the article, when viewed without the downplay, the 'DRUG' which is used for recreational use actually becomes as dangerous as Alcohol.

A drug, which isn't prescribed by a doctor, which affects the brain is a dangerous thing. Marijuana should be legalized for medicial use only and not for people wanting to change their mental processes for a quick buzz.

I experience this driving on the freeway. Its not deadly, not to mention this effect is really quite rare.

2. "Of course, abuse of any intoxicating substance over long periods will reduce a person’s ability to function normally, but cannabis is no better or worse."
Coffee does this to me. My hands shake, my personality changes, I am unable to fall asleep if I drink to much. Should it be banned also?

3. "Laboratory tests have shown that cannabis (When intoxicated) diminishes the short term memory."
Why is this a problem? Sleepiness does this to me. Using it while working could be an issue even for those using it for medicinal purposes, but compared to the total and obvious shock to both long and short term memory caused by the excessive consumption of alcohol this is rendered irrelevant in its meager scope of effect.

4. "Users of high strength drugs such as heroin or LSD are also statistically more likely to have used cannabis in the past"
This is taken out of context.. to continue the point being made..
but this is just toying with statistics; when comparing the number of cannabis users with hard-drug users, the numbers are extremely small - suggesting that there is no link at all.
I do concede that those determined to bury their consciousness will find Cannabis completely inadequate and will move on to other drugs, but that does not make Cannabis a trigger. A higher correlation exists between alcohol use and high strength drugs anyway.

actually becomes as dangerous as Alcohol.
Your argument fails to convince me of the danger. The number of horrible, violent crimes committed under the influence of alcohol is staggering, unquestioned and tragic. Incidence of crimes under MJ is fairly hard to find.

I think it should remain unavailable to children, yet decriminalized so that we could all establish a reasonable stance towards it compared with other chemicals we use in a non-medicinal manner.

I hate the automatic equation of use with abuse.

There are those who practice moderation and responsible use of those substances that affect the CNS. Besides, anything that is overused can result in less than beneficial effects. Drinking four gallons of milk a day would be harmful.

And this attempt to assert that most people who are heroin addicts started with pot. I'dI bet most drank alcohol even before smoking pot. I wonder how many people there are that do smoke pot and have never used hard drugs and have no inclination to as well.?

This is the same idea that anytime a crime occurs and drugs are found, it must be drug related. Such as if a body is found in a house as well as a stash of pot. If they find me dead and there's milk in the 'fridge will it be labeled a lactose related death?

I have to ask if you support the prohibition of alcohol, which is just as dangerous as Marijuana, for all but medical purposes.
