School defends spy cameras in bathrooms
School defends spy cameras in bathrooms
School says that the 14 year old student and her father are overreacting and deny that cameras in the students bathrooms are an invasion of privacy. They claim that the danger of misuse of soap dictated the need to see nekid boys and girls. No word on whether they feel it is okay to have cameras in the teachers' bathrooms picked by 2manyusernames 10 months ago

un-freaking-believable. I know the UK is the most spied on country in the world, but this is ridiculous and obscene.

Spying on teenage girls and boys just to stop horseplay!? How the heck can the school think that is warranted. As I said in my last sentence what do you think they would say if the adult bathrooms were videotaped to prevent theft of supplies, adult-level "horseplay", and possible drug/alcohol/tobacco misuse? Obviously that would never be allowed.

It is time several people in the UK said STOP!

I get the feeling based on various posts that the UK may probably be one of the most surveilled societies. (missed by...."just now")

No mention is given if the cameras can "see" into the stalls or are they just pointing at the sinks.

Still, this is a big step over the line.

Now I really want to know what the incidences were. Misusing soap and paper towels? The mind fair boggles!

Are the cameras just at the sinks, or are they pointing at the toilets as well? I understand if it's just at sinks, as that would address the problem identified without exposing nudity, but they don't say that. Wouldn't it be better to have the cameras recording who goes in and out?

yes it is. It is also one of Galoot's avatar. I changed my avatar in honor of FAF and haven't changed it back yet.

Even if it was just the sinks that is still too far. Ask yourself what would you say if your employer installed cameras in the bathrooms pointed just at the sink because of the rash of stolen toilet paper?

I love it. You managed to condense my entire comment down to a single line and make the point I was trying to make even better and more poignant

I work and live on an Air Force base. They call it a fish bowl for a reason. :)

Ironically, the men and women who work to preserve the freedoms of the US aren't entitled to them.

are there cameras in the bathrooms? Even in the civilian employee areas?

Depends on the facility. They have the option of putting cameras in, yes. Most areas aren't specified as 'civilian' or 'military'. I was more thinking my house. I don't think they could legally put a camera anywhere in my house on base, but I do know that they can enter into my house without notifying me in advance. In theory, this is just in case there's an emergency, like a gas leak, but in practice...I don't want to push the line.

But for a specific example...As a civilian, your employer can require that you undergo random drug tests. This entails sending you to a lab, where they provide you with a little cup, and a bathroom where you fill the cup. In the AF, when they do random drug tests, there are observers for filling the cup.

At first, I thought they had them aimed at the sinks. As it seems that this would be the best way to tell who's taking "paper towels and soap." But putting them in the stalls? Really?

From the article:
"The CCTV was installed to monitor these areas and it's done the trick. There's been a significant improvement."
How much you wanna bet the "significant improvement" is because kids are just holding it 'til they get home?

Isn't there some pretty harsh penalties for filming nakkid children? Sounds like their slippery slopes are meeting in the middle of their foggy quagmire.

Misuse of soap? Huh? You mean, like, in prison?

the acknowledgment that one is being watched turns one's actions into robotic impulses; acting in such a way that classifies their actions socially acceptable to the viewer. in doing so, the self becomes a serf to the viewer's expectations..

a crude example of this is while driving; a policee officer drives behind, in turn the individual appropriates their actions.

such a pathology gives rise to a nation where the peoples slave to maintain social security. consequently, asking no questions of the authority due to the tiresome act of serfing.

this is why you should love liberty.

They should just put fake cameras in there and tell the kids they are real. That would scare the kids in to believing that they shouldn't horseplay and at the same time there wouldn't be a creepy sick perv watching kids going to the bathroom.
