A dozen Asiatic black bears, malnourished and diseased from years spent on abusive bile-harvesting farms in southwest China, were recovering Saturday after being handed over to an animal charity group. The Animals Asia Foundation took in the bears from state-approved farms where holes were cut in their abdomens so that their bile could drip out to be harvested and used in Chinese traditional medicine. tags asiatic bears bile harvest farms chinaMore on the rescue organization. picked by suebe 10 months ago |

Bears have the right idea. Don't fight the cold; just shut 'er down for six months and emerge when it's warmer. Why didn't we think of that? For one thing, our bones would wither. We'd all get osteoporosis, a disease in which bones become more fragile. Bears don't get osteoporosis, even though they hibernate for more than half the year in Alaska. What might we learn from this? picked by suebe 10 months ago 3 comments edit related share science |
