Global financial crisis takes its toll on China
Global financial crisis takes its toll on China
- 20 million laid off
- half of all toy factories have closed
- government plans 4 trillion yuan ($USD 585 million) stimulus package.
- risk of "mass incidents and social unrest" as jobless migrants return to the countryside.

I have also heard that the factories are just closing their doors - no back pay, no severance packages. We are not talking wealthy people here but they all contribute to the developed world's way of life. picked by aclister 10 months ago

The skies in Hong Kong have been a lot clearer this winter but the social cost is unimaginable.

Because its cheap labor. Their currency may be catching the dollar... but for decades, the dollar was much much stronger... so it was actually much cheaper to have stuff assembled in China and shipped to the US for sale. in the long run you are talking millions or billions saved depending on how long you are tracking. I personally think its deplorable because those are jobs that people HERE could be filling, but with minimum wage laws, medical coverage, insurance and work ethic laws (IE child labor) it just cost less money... and if the only thing that matters to you is making a profit, then its not even a choice.

And lets not forget the labor unions that have priced themselves out of jobs.
