Texas fireball turns out to be 'Pickup sized' meteor
Texas fireball turns out to be 'Pickup sized' meteor
The Federal Aviation Administration said the fireball appeared to be a natural phenomenon, and a University of North Texas astronomer said more specifically that it was probably a *pickup truck-sized meteor with the consistency of concrete.

*Is it just Texas where they measure the size of meteors by small truck variants? picked by tragluk 9 months ago

They're just trying to cover up Zephram Cochrane's first warp test. I expect the Vulcans to be arriving any time now.

As for measurement, it depends on the size of the meteor, just as it depends on the size of hail. Notice that hail size is usually described in terms of sporting equipment(golf balls, baseballs, softballs, basketballs) or coins since those items are readily visualized. Same thing with Texas, meteors and trucks.

I think it's part of the communications satellites that crashed recently. No telling where all the parts will end up.

Please tell me that there were never basketball sized hailstones.

I hate to be Captain Buzzkill, but really, how else would you describe something that size? Nothing else I can think of immediately conveys the size of it like saying it was the size of a pickup.

Hail, on the other hand, you could say was jumbo-muffin sized rather than softball sized, and everyone would get it. :D

For the record, given the choice between a softball, a muffin, and hail, I'd rather get hit by the muffin.

I actually saw this thing sunday morning while I was running a marathon and at about mile 17. Nobody around me saw it and it made me think I was going crazy and hallucinating.

I wasn't! YEAH!!!

Everything's bigger in Texas.

Actually the video of the meteor coming down was pretty funny. You see the meteor up in the sky and about 20-30 people running away. It was a classic 'old movie' video where everyone thinks they can outrun the global disaster incoming... Turned out to be just a marathon that was going on anyways.

We were actually taught to use the various sporting equipment sizes in storm spotter training for the reasons given, at least up to softball sized. Then you could use actual measurements(inches, cm, etc) for the larger stones.

As for basketball sized hail, there have been some events that came pretty close, like this one:

That storm had verified reports of 7 inch hail with impact craters.

A pickup sized meteor can only mean one thing...

Some poor Autobot or Decepticon is now stuck in Texas living out an awful life as a pickup truck after crashing down away from the rest of their buddies and getting lost.
