 McDonalds: Heroes Not Welcomed Here
McDonalds: Heroes Not Welcomed Here
Nigel Haskett, a McD's employee stopped a man from beating a female customer who was eating in the restaurant. He further stopped the man from re-entering the restaurant. Nigel gets shot for his actions. McDonalds & their insurance company denies workman's comp because he was acting outside the scope of his job. picked by 2manyusernames 9 months ago

Perhaps he was acting outside the scope of his job duties.

If I had to bet, I would say he is lying when he said McDonalds never told him in the event of a robbery or crime that an employee should not take any heroic actions. That is the standard rule for almost all businesses.

McDonalds should have come to some sort of compromise at the very least.

Even if they felt they shouldn't/couldn't pay for all the costs involved with WC, they should have least paid his $300,000 medical bill. Further more they should have publicly recognized his actions in some way. Perhaps get with the city to do some sort of join recognition and thank you.

The amount of publicity they could have milked out of that and the degree of public goodwill would have been worth the $300k.

Now they are facing bad publicity and the disgust of the public.

Sad sad case.

I'm thinking of writing them a boycott email. I'll let you know how it turns out.

2many, once again you said exactly what I was thinking.

This guy is a hero, and this case just shows you what kind of company McDonalds is. I would say I am going to boycott them, but I already do lol

Anyone else have the feeling that if this was Starbucks or something, they would have treated this guy like a hero and milked him for as much publicity as possible.

You would win. They are all informed as to company policy about being a hero. This may be a tough case for McDonalds as publicity is concerned.*go to the front page*

This wasn't a robbery. It was a beating in progress. If he had just called 911 and not intervened, she could have been critically injured or killed. He did the right thing IMO.

Hopefully the publicity will spur people into contributing to the trust fund set up for him.

This is what pisses me off about companies. They have all of these rules about what you can and can't do in situations like this.

If someone did something like that I'd stop them. If someone stole stuff I'd stop them. I'm sticking with my morals and what's right over what the d*ckhole company wants you to do.

I won't compromise for a faceless company that doesn't care about anything.

Heh...that's one thing I plan on not mentioning in my boycott letter - the fact that I would not eat there on a bet.

On that note, why give a f**k if they are being robbed? Seriously, its not worth it. If this had been a robbery I would have agreed with McDonalds, they would have got anything stolen back through insurance and chances are the robber would be caught eventually.

Currently reading "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser, and every page is a "WTF" moment.

According to him (paraphrased), in the 1990's the Occupational And Safety Administration issued guidelines to improve safety in fast food restaurants, prompted by the fact that homicides had become the leading cause of workplace fatalities for women. These guidelines were voluntary, but the National Restaurant Association lobbied hundreds of congressmen to oppose such recommendations. A subsequent investigation by the LA Times found that many of these congressmen had received donations from the NRA. One of the most outspoken was a Jay d**key, an Arkansas republican, who just so happened to own two Taco Bell restaurants. In 1999, the National Council of Chain Restaurants assisted in the formation of a new organization, in part dedicated to opposing any enforcement of OSHA recommendations and regulations - The Alliance for Workplace Safety.

You can see part of this on Google Books (search "Fast Food Nation"

Well rules are rules. You can't just make exceptions for everyone who gets shot trying to save the life of one of your customers. Maybe the attacker was a customer too. No-one thought of his rights too! What about "the customer is always right". The McDonalds employee in question interrupted a private interaction between two customers....
Ok, no you can't turn this around to make McDonalds look good. I would boycott it, but the closest one is over 1,000 miles away.

Theres a difference for not caring whether or not McDonalds gets robbed from a customer being assaulted. It's not your duty to defend a multibillion dollar corporation from but a defenseless woman is different.

I wouldn't stop an armed robbery. I'd give them the money if they didn't even have a gun! What do I care?

I'd stop abuse like this without a doubt, and if I felt like tackling someone, I'd go after someone stealing stuff. I haven't tackled anyone in like 4 years. I've got some aggression to get out!

This just reconfirms my long standing boycott of Mcs**tholes.

This guy is an inspiration to young people and an example to all. Seriously disgusted by this story. Like has already being said the LEAST that Mcs**theads could have done is pay the guys medical bills.

If this guy had a gun and was willing to shoot a random stranger god knows what he might have done if this guy hadn't intervened, maybe shot up the restaurant.

Angry but unsurprised is probably the best way to describe my feelings while reading this.

I'm seriously considering starting an online partition for what it's worth.
