 Sex Change Patient Sues Doctors
Sex Change Patient Sues Doctors
He claims that the doctor's didn't diagnose him correctly, therefore their recommendation and subsequent surgery to remove his male genitals was "misconceived". WTF? picked by suebe 9 months ago

Seems pretty fair. Sounds like the docs pushed him into something, telling him it would make him happier and fulfilled in the end.

Quite the contrary; doctors don't "push" a diagnosis of transsexualism on patients. Rather they tend to operate as overzealous and skeptical gatekeepers, insisting on all manner of conditions that make it difficult to get the surgery, including regular therapy and one to two years successfully living full time in the preferred gender role. And most surgeons who perform the procedure require corroborating diagnoses from at least two psychologists/psychiatrists before they'll take on a patient. Of course there are ways to game the system and sidestep the barriers, but a person has to be determined to do it.

My guess is that this person lied and cheated his way to get approval and now regrets it. This happens every few years, and it's always the sort of thing that gets press. Unfortunately, it effectively overshadows the stories of the thousands of successful transitions and threatens to make it that much more difficult for others to get the surgery.

It's quite possible they pushed him along and didn't explore the alternatives with him. It's possible they went against the Standards of Care and rushed him.

However, I doubt that's the case. First off, he expected them to research his history, but it's his job to provide that information to them. Psychiatrists are not psychic, and they cannot summon information at will.
Second of all, if he can figure out that he didn't show any symptoms and that his childhood may have cause some issues now, why didn't he before? The knowledge of his past didn't just magically disappear, and I'd expect that he at least did SOME research on the subject, since it's not likely that you're going to find a psychiatrist who's qualified under the Standards of Care to give the go-ahead by pure chance. Unless he was hit pretty hard by the idiot ball, I just can't see how that can happen.
Finally, I doubt he didn't notice that things weren't going so well when he was on hormones or doing the real life experience. If he was feeling any discomfort, and he didn't bring it up, it's his fault and he needs to take responsibility for it.
It sounds to me like he lied to them the whole way and is now seriously regretting it, and trying to console himself by blaming others for his mistakes and stuffing his pockets in the process...

He is suing for damages, including "extensive" medical expenses, related to his treatment.
In other words, he's hoping the lawsuit will pay for the surgery and psychiatric prerequisites for the surgery.
