 Signing Babies (3 videos)
Signing Babies (3 videos)
Proponents of teaching sign language to babies say it is a powerful tool for early communication. Frustration and outbursts are lessened because baby can immediately communicate his wants and needs long before he can physically pronounce them. picked by equinox 9 months ago

I read it as SINGING babies and was really confused about the correlation between music and sign language.

Ditto Ashlesdc.

I'm planning on teaching my baby to sign. I don't know if I'll actually do it or not, but I'd like to. I'll be a SAHM so I'll have all day every day, plus we're eventually going to homeschool so maybe I will actually teach the kid (who could be here in three weeks!!!!) to sign.

I read it as "signing babies", expecting to see some new trend of tattooing one's child with your signature. Phew!

The only (and very minor) issue I have with this is that some "baby signing" books and resources use an entirely made up form of sign language. If you want to do this, be sure to get adaptable ASL (or whatever is used in your country) rather than some special baby signs.

When this first started getting popular, a lot of child psychologists warned that it could retard the baby's ability to learn to speak later on.

It turned out that the opposite was true. Babies that learned how to sign learned how to talk better and sooner than babies that didn't.

I remember when people started doing this too. And I thought, yeah okay whatever. I had two children at the time. The oldest has been talking since she was 15 months. And I actually mean talking by putting words together and making a sentence. Next in line needed speech therapy. My third child did the signing all on his own. I didn't teach it to him. It just came naturally. He did the "eat" "more" "finished" signs the most. But as I watched the videos I recognized others. He doesn't sign anymore, just fires 150 questions at me per minute.

oh and I read it as SINGING too! hahaha. Glad I am not alone.
