I believe it's only entrapment if you suggest it first and lead them into a situation. If you're posing as a 13f and he comes right out and asks to meet for sex, he's just crossed the line.

This would be similar to prostitute sting operations where the John has to be the first person to offer sex for cash. After that - *kerblammo*

Hahahaha

I've seen the show and they've caught a lot of sickos. I feel bad for some of them until I remember, "oh wait. They wanted to have sex with a child!" Bad decisions come with consequences and it's a good thing this guy was caught before he did any real damage.

I watched the whole Dateline thing and I feel pretty ashamed for the male gender. What DO these guys think? I'm clueless when it comes to these guys when they want to have "dates" with females that would stoop so low as to "date" men like them.

Now, this is in NO WAY meant to question how bad this type of man is but, is there no example of this kind of predatorary behaviour on the part of women? Aren't there any women who try to get 13 year old boys out for a "date"?

I'm just going by the law of averages... They caught 30-some guys in this sting. Didn't any women fall into their online trap, e-mailing the 13yo boy? I'm just trying to understand the men's behaviour and if it happened with women too, that might mean that there is a whole different dynamic going on here.

I'm stumped and still ashamed to be the same sex as these morons and trying to explain why a few men are so deviant.

If one wants examples of shall we say... "poor choices" women have made, one need only look at all the women teachers sleeping with their very young students.

Have you heard of Mary Kay Letourneau, Sherry Brians, Amy McElhenney or the like?

Sure it happens, but you have to remember that if a 13 year old boy has sex with an adult (like a teacher), then he's a stud and cool and popular. If a 13 year old girl has sex with an adult, she's a victim and the adult is a predator.

Before anyone starts flamming me...I think that any adult who sleeps with a child should be punished to the full extent of the law. I like the way the law is written in Texas...at the age of 17, you are old enough to have consensual sex with someone of any age*. If you are between the ages of 14 and 16, you can only have consensual sex with someone who is no more than 3 years different in age, as long as they are older than 14. Anyone under 14 cannot (by law) have consensual sex.

*Unless you are in a Teacher/Student (or Mentor/Mentored)relationship.

I agree that this is sort of the other side of the coin but I wasn't just talking about having sex with a kid. I was more in line with the sick stuff that they were IM'ing about and the things that the guys came prepared to do. Maybe the teacher stuff was the same way but I just feel like the male predator stuff was a whole lot more bent.

I guess you've never been a woman trying to IM or chat or even just play a game online without feeling sexually harrassed ;)

Honest and serious question, why does it feel that you are truly surprised that men are capable of things like this? Maybe Im just reading your comments wrong...

Yes... you are reading me backwards... I'm asking why are these men so sick and why are women not.

In order to understand the whole situation I was wondering why there aren't women (as the other half of the species) that are just as sick as the guys? Since I don't see that there are women that sick (except maybe for the teachers mentioned before??) there must be a real "flaw" in men. I really don't want to foster the idea that men can be flawed in a way that women aren't so I was looking for a related behaviour on the female side of things - but I'm not sure I have...

That makes me feel bad for all us "normal" men. You know, guilt by association...

Try a google search for words like "cybersex, molester, women"... when I did that I got a few PDF and quite a few websites that you might be interested in. As long as you can abide a few actual cybersex websites...

Obviously these people are sick.. I think they need help, not an arrest and shame. I mean, what they are doing is revolting, but you have to think.. why would they do this in the first place? that is what should be addressed, not just vilifying them as evil. Shows like to project this sense of smug superiority, but I don't see them trying to help fix the situation.. all they are doing is whipping up hysteria and helping to make the predators more sophisticated. But if its lurid it'll sell Taco-Bell commercials huh?

If watching this show will convince a parent or two that the internet is not just fun and games - and that they should keep an eye on just who is talking to their children - and maybe save a child who may be willing (for whatever reason) to meet that pervert in person - then I think its served it's purpose right then and there.

(I do realize that the above sounds a lot like "Won't someone think of the children!" but sometimes it just needs to be said.)

(Also, I realize that I watch The Simpsons obsessively and that not everyone gets those little quotes so I thought I better clarify that too!)

Good discussion going on here...

I imagine that our legal system has a problem. Where do you draw the line between illegal behaviour and a personality disorder. People who do the predatory stuff like this need to be helped in a medical/psychological way and incarcerating them won't (probably) help. But then again, (other) career, repeat and/or violent criminals have a personality disorder too and do we help them too in the same way or do we throw them in jail - again and again.

I think it's just easier to say that a person broke the law (quantifiable) and throw them in jail then to look at each situation and person and determine (subjective) if a different form of treatment would be better.

If we did try to treat disturbed criminals we would end up having to build more mental hospitals and fewer prisons.
