Many people assume that marijuana was made illegal through some kind of process involving scientific, medical, and government hearings; that it was to protect the citizens from what was determined to be a dangerous drug.

This article seems to have confused Marijuana with Hemp, these are two seperate plants, though they are both species of the Cannabis. Hemp however, cannot make you high if you smoke it. Though hemp is regulated by the government because it is still possable to extract THC from it, and for a few other reasons.
Hemp is not Marijuana, but this article does not bother to tell you this.

Hemp (from Old English hnep, see cannabis (etymology)) is the common name for plants of the entire family of Cannabis.
Cannabis has long been used for fibre (hemp), for medicinal purposes, and as a drug. Industrial hemp products are made from Cannabis plants selected to produce an abundance of fiber and minimal levels of THC (Δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol), one psychoactive molecule that produces the "high" associated with marijuana. Various extracts including hashish and hash oil are also produced.[1] The cultivation and possession of Cannabis for recreational use is outlawed in most countries.
Hemp = Cannabis = Marijuana
its only diffrent strains, like roses can have diffrent colors..

Interesting, but it ignores the fact that, in the 1930's, hemp's versatility threatened the corporate interests of William Randolph Hearst's newspaper empire and the potential profits of DuPont's new process of making plastics out of oil and coal.
