When you don't wear hunter's orange you run a very high risk of being mistaken for a game animal. At a distance, when you're wearing camo and have foliage between you and the shooter, you just look like movement in the trees; people will shoot at this.

Wear hunters orange or you may as well be wearing antlers and a buckskin coat.

Isn't the first thing they teach you in hunter's ed is to never shoot unless you're 100% sure? At least, that was the first thing I was taught.

I guess not everyone has the patience to wait.

You can't wear orange when turkey hunting, turkey hunting requires you to be very well camouflaged. The fact that this man didn't know where his nine year old son was while taking him hunting is amazing, and incredibly stupid.

Why can't you wear orange?

Because turkeys have excellent vision. Some states require you to wear orange when entering or leaving the woods, but never while hunting turkey, they'll see you. People use large blinds so they're not seen.

I had no idea turkeys had such good eye sight. Furthermore I never knew about the rules of hunting turkey. Of course, I don't hunt, and neither does Lark. But I would hope that if he did, he would always no the whereabouts of our children should they go with him. Which, they would not. Sad.

Does anyone else see the irony in the kid's name being Hunter?

Man, if that kid didn't die he would've been all like "are you trying to say I look like I turkey?" and that would've been really bad for his self-confidence...so maybe it's better he died?

I've got turkey hunting with hunter's orange on. I've also eaten a lot of wild turkey.

I think the first thing they teach you is either that, or to wear hunters orange. They go hand in hand :D

I don't think you need a course to have some common sense. I also think they were probably drunk :) well, at least the father for sure.

We here in belle plaine mn, are not so gruff to think of the father as stupid, both were camoflaged, the boy was told to stay where he was and did not. it is a tragic accident and the father and mother have lost their son. why are people so quick to judge and make fun of a childs death .
shame on you all.

Oh, so he was going for this kind of Wild Turkey first?

You never shoot unless you are sure of your target. The father just learned that lesson in the most painful way imaginable other than being the one that got shot. You don't shoot at movement in the brush. You are likely just going to miss at best, and at worst you might just kill your son.
