Federal Judge Rules Fox News “Gullible” and “Unprofessional”
Federal Judge Rules Fox News “Gullible” and “Unprofessional”
Basically, the paraphrased story is: A couple kids pulled a goof on a couple other kids during lunch. The incident was documented and handled by the school. Another guy put a story on a website to parody the situation. FoxNews then took it upon themselves to report the story, based on the satirical site, causing the town to be in an uproar. Fast forward to a lawsuit for slander. picked by arsphidius 4 months ago

I can't believe the judge dismissed the case. Sounded like it fit the criteria to me. Hopefully they appeal.

Slander has to be proven to have caused monetary damage, either by reputation, or job loss/unavailability due to what was said. And it has to be intentional.

Since neither can be proven, it should have been thrown out.

Sloppy/irresponsible reporting? definitely.

Slander? nope.

The real irony is that FOX News competitor (MSNBC) was caught on Thursday reporting about a false website.

In reporting a story about Obama's campaign, and it's launching of a "new website to combat smears against Obama," they talked about www.fightthesmears.org. BUT, that website was a gag website... which instead of attacking the smears, it would build upon and perpetuate the smears.

That site has since been taken down (for some reason). The real site they wanted to talk about was "www.fightthesmears.com".

CONCLUSION... the media is having trouble differentiating between real and fake on the internet. It is not a problem localized to one particular network... rather the industry as a whole.

I think it transcends the media. Lots of people are duped by faux sites. The real problem is that the media should fact check before they run a story.
