An administrator of criminal case appeals in Louisiana committed suicide. According to his suicide note he killed himself because of guilt that, for 13 years, he had complied with a judge's order to deny, sight-unseen, all appeals filed by defendants who were acting without lawyers. In Louisiana, about 90 percent of appellants cannot afford a lawyer, and so he had denied 2,400 appeals, without the appeal judges reading a single word of their appeal factums.

Scientists have discovered mutated worms that love to eat pollutants such as lead and arsenic. The scientists are excited that the critters will be able to clean up polluted lands, but any one who has seen the movie "Tremors" knows that this will not end well as the worms will soon grow to immense proportions and devour entire cities. We are doomed.

In Tanzania, Albinos are being are hunted down, murdered and/or mutilated for body parts. Some are eaten. Inedible parts (e.g. hair) are woven into the fabric of fishing nets for its magical luck-bringing properties. Legs are hacked off with machetes because the femur of an albino is particularly prized.

Two women at a Tampa Bay butcher shop got into an argument over who was next to be served and one decided to settle the argument by biting the other's fingertip off.
After that, the first woman left, telling the butcher that he could go ahead and serve the now fingerless second woman since she now had all the meat she needed.
The first woman was heard to remark that she planned on serving the fingertip with fava beans and a nice bottle of wine. (Okay I made the part about the fava beans up.)
