It's funny how life comes full-circle. My mother gave birth to me while she waited backstage to be a contestant on a TV game show. A few decades later, I'm the host of a reality-TV show. You may not have heard of the show, as it's run on the local cable channel here in Rural, a mountain town in a polka-dot state. We're one of the blue dots on a sea of red.

African wars to increase as a result of Global Warming Posted: 17 hours ago by cecilberman
This is consistent with the CIA's assessment. It's probably why the U.S. wants to establish an African command. Given the mineral wealth of that continent, the U.S. will be facing off against China and Russia for dwindling natural resources there.

Middle school students suspended for “kick a Jew day” Posted: 18 hours ago by cecilberman
That's what you get for showing "Borat" in the school auditorium.

Landon said until further notice, the school will focus the first 20 minutes of each day on character traits, beginning with respect and kindness. Homeroom teachers will speak with the students about these traits and will focus on bullying prevention, he said. Videos on the topic will be sought out and used as part of the training, he said.

His parents must be so proud.

In attendance were a live audience, an MC, the bride's virtual video game girlfriend — who made a speech — and a real human priest.

Galileo's missing fingers found in jar Posted: 2 days ago by cecilberman
You have to scroll well into the article to answer some obvious questions:

"Removing body parts from the corpse was an echo of a practice common with saints, whose digits, tongues and organs were revered by Catholics as relics with sacred powers.

There is an irony in Galileo's having been subjected to the same treatment, since he was persecuted by the Catholic Church for advocating the theory that the earth circles the sun, rather than the other way around. The Inquisition forced him to recant and jailed him in 1634."

But will it be Dobbs/Palin or Palin/Dobbs? Posted: 3 days ago by cecilberman
During an interview on WTOP radio in Washington, Dobbs fueled rumors he’s seeking a bid for public office, possibly the highest office in the land, when asked if speculation about an Oval Office bid is “crazy talk.”

“What’s so crazy about that?” Dobbs, 64, replied. “Golly!”

Oh, I hope he runs. We need more comical characters with little or no relevant experience to provide relief from all the too-serious mainstream candidates.

Religious leaders urge civil disobedience Posted: 5 days ago by cecilberman
Conservative Christian leaders unveiled a declaration Friday calling on Christians not to comply with rules and laws forcing them to accept abortion, same-sex marriage and other ideals that go against their religious doctrines.

They don't realize that permitting gay marriage and abortion isn't the same as requiring them.

Neither alcohol, nor linoleum, nor leftover noodles.... Posted: 6 days ago by cecilberman
O’Kelly, 95, said she was watching TV in another room when she heard a noise. She thought her daughter had arrived, but became suspicious when no one came to greet her.

When she went to check, O’Kelly said she found Pflughaupt sitting on her kitchen floor. She was using her hands to eat leftover noodles, and they were running down Pflughaupt’s shirt. O’Kelly didn’t recognize her as the mail carrier.

“I said, ‘What are you doing here?’ and she didn’t answer me,” O’Kelly said. “She just kept eating those noodles.”

The 21st Century Fuller Brush Man Posted: 1 week ago by cecilberman
A teenager who had been going door to door trying to sell marijuana early Thursday was arrested after he went to the residence of a Brownsville police officer, police said.

If he claims he was driven to this action by the state of the economy, he could be the poster boy for those who argue the stimulus package isn't working.

The War on Christmas season has officially begun Posted: 1 week ago by cecilberman
It would be easy to get sidetracked into debating the merits of the War on Christmas. Why, for example, is the phrase "Happy holidays" so insufferable to Christian fundamentalists, but not the vulgar, surfeiting exploitation of Christ's name to sell smokeless ashtrays, dessert toppings, Droid phones and trampolines? I'm not a theologian but I think the Gospels are pretty clear that Jesus was no fan of merchants.

Many in Small Town Want Gitmo Detainees in Their Prison Posted: 1 week ago by cecilberman
And, of course, many don't.

Rosie Rojas, a waitress at the Sunrise Restaurant just east of the prison, said customers had been talking about the proposal since it became public Saturday. While the potential to create more than 3,000 jobs has some local residents excited about the possible impact on the local economy, others worry about the safety of the community if Thomson becomes a home for terrorism suspects, she said.
