Maine voters reject same-sex marriage Posted: 3 weeks ago by Marli
I am so very disappointed in my state this morning.
It looked very good in the beginning- we were winning with 55%, but as more and more precincts came in, it dwindled. The last count I saw had it as 53% voting to take away marriage rights, and 47% voting to protect them.

It's a vermonstrosity.

A little theater in Maine recognizes Talk Like A Pirate Day Posted: 2 months ago by Marli
This was the finale of an Early Evening Show at the Oddfellow Theater, a small little family theater in Maine.
Fun facts:
-The guy hopping around on one leg is half of Eepy Bird. (the Mentos & Coke guys)
-The theater is in the same town I went to high school in.
-My husband and I met there when we were teenagers. The owner was letting our school's drama club put on productions there.

A pretty realistic (i.e. rather graphic) description of exactly why you shouldn't leave your dog alone in the car on a hot summer day. Or even a warm summer day.

Some truly creative, if ill-advised, stuff here. Fish "tacos" (I didn't add the quotes). Mousse of Salmon, in the shape of a salmon. Why didn't I think of that!
Posted a couple years ago, as well, but due for a repost, I thought.

The bill was passed in both House and Senate over the course of the last couple weeks, and signed by the governor a couple hours ago. Maine is now the 5th state in the nation allowing same-sex couples to marry.
More info at a local site, but in anticipation of their site not being able to handle the traffic, I'm linking to the AP.

Shriners hospitals, which have provided free care since before the Great Depression, are considering closing a quarter of their facilities as donations stagnate, costs increase and the charity's endowment shrivels.
The Springfield hospital, which may be closed, is where my brother had orthopedic surgery when we were little.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Briefcase, Room 306, the Lorraine Motel Posted: 8 months ago by Marli
On April 4, 1968, LIFE photographer Henry Groskinsky and writer Mike Silva, on assignment in Alabama, learned that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had been shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. They raced to the scene and there, incredibly, had unfettered access to the hotel grounds, Dr. King's room, and the surrounding area. For reasons that have been lost in the intervening years, the photographs taken that night and the next day were never published. Until now.
