Cheeselog once mentioned the idea of a beer exchange program. I really would enjoy trying this.
There are some legal issues involved that will prevent us from directly sending beer to one another through the mail/ups/whatever; but businesses have less restrictions. Many beer specialty stores also ship orders out all over the country. So if I were to purchase a sixpack of local beer shoppe and pay for the business to ship them to cheeselog, then it's legal.
Would anyone be interested in this?
Keep in mind that if you sign up, you must be willing to purchase as much as you are recieving. Don't ask for 3 sixers and only give out one. You also must be of legal drinking age. My most humble of apologies to non-american plimates who are interested in this, but I don't think you'll be able to participate due to the additional costs of shipping overseas. I'm not sure about Canada, I used to take calls for UPS and I kind of think that Canada's shipping is the same as US shipping, but I'm not sure about that. Anyone know for sure?
I have access to the Great Lakes breweries, if anyone is interested; they have some great beers and I know it's not available everywhere in the country.
*Yes, I'm on a beer kick recently. I stopped smoking pot two weeks ago and I've become more interested in beer as a result.
**I've recently joined two "beer communities" online; ratebeer and beeradvocate (both free). I joined both so that I could compare them and decide which I liked best; so far I'm leaning towards beeradvocate.com because I prefer it's method of rating. If anyone is interested in checking one of those out and joining for comparitive purposes; I'm donteatpoop on both of those. I think it would be hip to see a few plimates over on one of those places.
Did any of that even make sense? Have I been babbling? I'm sort of drunk right now, so it's possible that I'm rambling. Sorry.
Just thought I should add that while my history of luck with law enforcement is lamentable, I have not yet spent (and never plan to spend) any period of time behind bars.

I was a member for a year, but ended up quitting because they sent Winter beers during the winter and the Winter beers during the summer. I'm a big fan of summer beers and I never received one from them....but that was 4 or 5 years ago...they may be better now.
edited to add:
It is currently illegal for breweries in Texas to sell there beer at the brewery. St. Arnold's and Rahr tried to get this law changed last year, but to no avail.
If we Texans want to participate, then we will have to buy and ship on our own.

I think buying and shipping on your own is illegal too. :( Are the distributers in Texas able to ship? That's how I'll have to do it in Ohio, pay for the beer and the shipment at the beer specialty store and have him just ship it to you like it was you who paid for it.

I won't ship beer. I'll ship "Yeast Cultures" stored in "decorative glassware"

I dunno about Texas distributors. I'll look and see.
«chinook : Is this beer exchange program going to operate sort of like a secret santa program, but maybe not so secret?
Good question. I think so. I don't know, I'm just an idea guy (and in this case all I did was take someone else's idea and check into the legality of shipping it from my state). I was hoping someone else would work out details.
«smarty1052:yay!! beer!! I'm game.. all we have is normal beer around detroit.. if u want some cheap 40's or something like mad dog or mickeys tho.. lol

If we want to be real simple, I could mail you beer, and the next person could mail me beer, and the next person could mail him/her beer....
We could also get a list of people who are willing to participate, so we could discuss who likes lagers/stouts/ales/moose piss and mail accordingly. I already decided that I'm going to mail 6 different local beers (probably BigRock), because I can buy taster's packs, and I'll drink all of the rest anyways.
Glass is a bad idea! It smashes. Use plastic or aluminium.
Don't tell Canada Post (or whoever you use for mail) that it's booze. They won't let you mail it. If you don't tell them, you won't get caught. I know this from experience.
You can wrap a 6-pack in brown paper packaging and tie it up with string, and it actually holds together quite nicely.
For Canadians mailing distances (even across Canada), if you know someone in the States, mail it to them and have them mail it elsewhere because it's one hell of a lot cheaper than mailing it just with Canada Post. They like to gouge, they do!
I have thought about this before too. Zach and I are beer snobs and like very good beer (we're fortunate enough to have a liquor store here that is owned by a guy who is all about good beer and not just about making money in a college town).
My dad actually just gave Zach money to go to the store and pick up some beer since my mom is gone and we're broke.
It's a grand idea, but it would be completely unrealistic to imagine myself getting involved in it. If you can imagine airmailing beer to and/or from an African country, then you obviously have a very active imagination!
Anyway, since I'm basically a selfish chap, and since I have better beer over here than in many other places anyway, I think the situation is worse for you than it is for me.
I'll sample Belgian beers again in July, when I get back to Europe for a while, but until then I'll do fine with a variety of African ones.
